Check this story out. The headline reads, "
Gay book not child's play, says lawmaker".
The book in question is King and King. To give you a little bit of background the children's book is about the search for a Princess for the Prince. The search is conducted by the Queen. The Prince doesn't like any of the women but does like the brother of one of them so the Prince marries him. They all live happily ever after. The second book in the series is King and King and Family, I think that is what it is called. In that book the Princes return from their honeymoon and start a family.
Here are some highlights from the article:
- Books "containing the theme of homosexuality" and other "age-inappropriate" topics should not be on public library shelves accessible to children, a St. Tammany Parish lawmaker (Rep. Crowe) said Thursday.
- The lawmaker has proposed legislation. The resolution says "materials concerning human sexuality and those of an arguably prurient nature should not be readily available to children, nor should the distribution of such materials be supported by public funds."
- "I am not espousing censorship," Crowe said. "There should be a way these types of books should be kept away from children and keep children from picking out these types of books."
- "This was entirely inappropriate to make this into a political issue," said Joe Cook, executive director of the Louisiana chapter of the American Civil Liberties Union. "It, unfortunately, feeds into a mind-set of a certain segment of society that wants to demonize people who are gay, and that is not in keeping with the spirit of the Constitution and the Bill of Rights. It's an example of intolerance. Unfortunately, we have politicians who want to exploit the intolerance and use it to their political advantage."
First off, limiting the availability of something because you disagree with the message is censorship. You are CENSORing certain persons from reading it.
Second, what makes one person think that they should alter other's reading preferences. Ugh! I despise with every ounce of my being ignorant people who think everyone should be like them. Why would we want to teach our children about issues such as tolerance and diversity?
This makes me want to vent about another topic: Why do people feel the need to have Confederate Flag bumper stickers and license plates? Do you not realize that it makes you look like the Redneck WASP? Or maybe that is the message you want to portray.
