So friday i headed out to wisconsin right after work...
My brother and his wife are living out there now as they collect more degrees, so i figured i'd check up on them. Ok, well the reason probably had more to do with the concert sunday nite in milwaukee, but it was still nice to see them too.
Madison is a pretty nice town...very much a college town, with loads of places to enjoy a beverage, and crazy college girls running around everywhere. Yes, i was in heaven.
Saturday nite we hit up a few bars and did the usual excessive drinking thing. Definitely a little reminiscent of my college days, with the combination of dirty bars, sticky floors and cheap beer. Can't complain about that!
Sunday afternoon we did a little bike riding around campus. Its really a perfect place for a campus...right on this big ole lake, with plenty of stuff to do all around it.
Wow, am i out of shape though! I was ready to collapse after that bike ride.
But the real fun began sunday evening...
we headed off to milwaukee to see PAUL MCCARTNEY!!!
If you're not a beatles fan you can probably disregard the rest (and also maybe go buy some cds in the meantime!!), but if you are read on...
It had to be one of the best concerts i've ever been too. Our seats were probably the shittiest i've ever had for a concert (if the concert was at the blue cross arena in rochester, our seats would've been on top of the library across the river) but it didn't even matter. We could hear just fine, and that was all that counted. He opened with "Magical Mystery Tour" and went on to play for about 3 hours, mixing in Beatles stuff, solo Paul, and a few new songs, before closing with the ending of abbey road. The new stuff was ok, but thankfully it was brief and just a quick break between classics. He must have played 30 songs or so. Here's some of the highlights that i can think of off the top of my head (in no particular order):
Penny Lane
Hey Jude
Let It Be
Maybe I'm Amazed
Band On The Run
Live and Let Die
Please Please Me
Sgt. Peppers,
the end
Back In The USSR
Yesterday
I'll Get You
Get Back
She Came In Through The Bathroom Window
I've Got A Feeling
Good Day Sunshine
Eleanor Rigby
I'll Follow The Sun
The Long And Winding Road
Got To Get You Into My Life
Drive My Car,
I Will
For No One
Fixing A Hole
Blackbird
Helter Skelter.
What a setlist!!
The best part was that he did a bunch of songs just by himself solo with a piano or an acoustic guitar. I mean the band was rocking too of course, but it was nice to get a fresh perspective on the brilliance of some songs when its just him sitting there at a piano. And for an old guy, he has held up remarkably well. Still has his voice and doesn't appear to be burned out at all. Can you say the same for any other 60-something year old rock star?
I think i may be let down at all future concerts though...its gonna be rough comparing them to this one!
And to top the weekend off, on my way back i stopped at Trader Joes outside of Cleveland and picked up a case of "two buck chuck" wine. Supposedly this stuff gets great reviews, and its dirt cheap, so it sounds right up my alley. Time to taste it!
