Well, this season looks particularly promising! Since doing my opening video's, I'm far more aware of what is available. The April season was pretty poor, but the October one has a lot to offer! I fear I have picked up too much...but that may also be because I'm watching 4 series I normally wouldn't, simply because 2 other people want to watch them with me.
So, let's see what's on.
Kannagi
I've had my eye on this series for a while. I simply liked the style and the description it gave. It's not how I imagined it would be, but I still really enjoy this series. It's about a god that resides in a tree at the local shrine. One day, that tree gets cut down and some of the wood falls into the hands of a student. He makes an image of a girl he'd seen when he was young around the shrine (same girl). When he's finished, the statue suddenly turns into the real thing. Now he's stuck with this girl/god and her need to vanquish impurities caused by the lack of sacred tree.
It's a pretty funny and cute set up. The opening is going to be the next big thing in amv's. Apparently she becomes an idol at some point. Should be interesting XD It's wonderfully animated and well done. I highly recommend it.
To aru Majutsu no Index
This is the second series I highly recommend. I absolutely love the opening <3 The setting is interesting, since it's set in a city of students all studying and training in supernatural powers. The main guy doesn't actually have any power at all. His unique skill is that his right hand negates any powers. Except it causes him problems as well, such as misfortune.
I was gripped by episode one. It has the right mix of setting up the plot, good characters, humour and action as well as a great soundtrack; all in the first episode! The second episode was full of excitement and drama. I am eagerly waiting for the next episode ^ ^
Ga-Rei-Zero
Now, I wasn't too sure about this one. Squads going off to fight supernatural monsters only they can see. Hmm. It was pretty so-so, I kept watching simply because I was intrigued by the main character's back story. By the end of the episode, however, I am stunned. Seriously, watch it for the ending, it'll catch you by surprise. As the subber said, "the ending is epic!" I am now very curious to see whether this show improves or not.
Kurozuka
A tale of love spanning thousands of years? Sounds pretty good to me! The first episode sets you up in ye olde Japan. It has some beautiful scenery scenes and the occasional action scene, but this is quite a slow anime. The plot is only just developing though, so I'll need a few more episodes before I can give a full opinion. So far so good. Try it, if you like the sound of the description on
anidb.
Tytania
There's been quite a bit of hype about this series. Not sure why...anyway, the opening plays like a national anthem and is terribly dull with just a lot of stills of some of the characters. As you watch, you'll learn that Tytania is a clan that practically dominate space. The four in the opening are the heads of this tyrannical clan and seem to have universe domination in mind. At which point I stopped and thought:
"Hang on a sec, these are the bad guys? Is this anime about the bad guys and their quest for domination? Surely not."
Sure enough, I was introduced to what look like pretty minor characters, until they whoop the ass of one of the four (the one with the RIDICUOUS name that I can't spell or pronouce O_O ) and get monopoly over the ending credits.
Curious to see where it goes, but there was a lot of boring stills in this anime. It relies heavy on computer imagery, which I am not that keen on.
Kyou no Go no Ni
Funny enough, I was going to watch the earlier OVA of this because it was so recommended. It reminds me a lot of Minami-ke (or perhaps it should be the other way round?), with a lot of childish moments with children mixed with suggestive material. It's cute and occasionally funny. It's a nice little series to pass the time with.
Toradora!
So veeeery typical of a shoujo. About a guy that looks scary, so people misjudge and a girl that's particularly violent at school and is also considered a delinquent. They find out they live next door to each other through a mistaken love-letter-in-bag situation. To be honest, I wouldn't be watching it if my boyfriend didn't take an interest in it. So I watch it with him :)
Kemeko DX
I'm starting to wonder if it's actually "DX" in the title, or if it's a smiley... Another series I watch for boyfriend, although I do enjoy randomness. It has one of the most offensive openings I have ever seen..."Jesus, Jesus, Jesus, God," accompanied by a depiction of christ carrying the cross being whipped by the main characters O_O It's completely unnecessary as well, since the series plays like a typical sudden girlfriend appearance with incredibly random bits. It's amusing on occasion, but nothing special.
Dark Butler/Kuroshitsuji
My friend has such different tastes in anime >_< I wouldn't touch this one normally. Demon butler tied to bratty kid in a mansion set in England? Bleh, no thanks. I was disappointed with the names as well, since Sebastion was the only actual british name they could come up with -_- Bard is not a name. And neither is Ciel Phantomhive! I was pretty bored by it, especially since it wasn't that dark at all. Stupid side characters all being stereotypes. My friend enjoyed it though.
Earl and Fairy
Urgh, I really didn't want to watch this, but again, my friend wanted to. It's so cringe worthy, it's painful. Sparkles, a fricking talking and walking-on-two-legs cat and the girl appears to not have hair but ribbons instead. Seriously, there is something wrong with her hair. I don't have anything good to say about this series. If you like shoujo and bishounen then knock yourself out. My friend did anyway.
So, there you have it. Quite a bit to get stuck into. I will no doubt drop a few of these when I don't have the time any more.
My anime society has decided to let me have a night of screening where I pick the anime :D I have chosen to show the first episodes of these:
1 - Dennou Coil [sci-fi, school, drama]
2 - Gankutsuou [novel, sci-fi, drama]
3 - Higurashi [thriller, horror, school]
4 - Minami-ke [slice of life]
5 - Le Chevalier D'eon [historical and fantasy]
6 - Tengen Toppa Guerren Langann
I think it's a good selection of pretty good, but little known anime. I hope it goes well, the recent screening choices have been appalling. Cat Soup (wtf, it's too crazy to be enjoyable), Bleach Second Movie (urghhhh!) and Fist of the North Star Movie (huge muscles, post-apocalyptic and punches that make people explode...). Looking forward to November!
My new hard-disk is unavailable because the power supply decided to melt on me, so I can't access most of my anime. I hope to get a replacement soon!
