Last night I had a dream in which I was telling everyone what I was focusing on for English honours next year. In real life, I don't really have much of an idea of what to do. But according to my subconscious it should be: the way that authors often have a book or something that is quite different from the rest of their oeuvre. Like, Jane Austen with Mansfield Park. Although I haven't read that so I can't really comment. In my dream I had additional examples but I can't remember them.
I'm not sure if this is a reasonably interesting idea, or something ridiculous. My housemate remarked that there is a lot you could say in terms of the nature of an author, Foucault-style. On the other hand, the practicalities seem a bit overwhelming. I mean, I would presumably have to read the entire body of work of a number of different people. Considering I only have a year to do honours, this seems like it would definitely result in a neurotic breakdown.
But the idea of telling people that I got my idea for my honours thesis from a dream is pretty seductive.
