Well, I broke down and set up a livejournal account. I kinda wanted to keep track of stuff that I am learning at work more than communicating with people, but feel free to comment and message me. I'll probably also talk about video games, because that is 95% of what I do outside of work.
So, anyway, I am really exhausted tonight! I worked for hours trying to get greenthumb (a java applet that allows communication through a jabber server) to work with my server. I have a feeling that the applet will need to be hosted on the jabber server for some reason (I think I read that in the developer's mailing list archive), but that will be impossible!
Our mailserver is set up on the same server as the jabber server, but a different one from the web server. That normally wouldn't be a problem, but there is a custom version of the web server on the mail server to support web mail. This custom version can't host pages other than the webmail. (BOOOOOO- Limitations.)
Anyway, the other dealie with that applet is that I don't know or understand java, really. Otherwise I could theoretically modify it to do what I wanted. If only I could write some kind of pure XML jabber client that worked over the website... but not in java.
