Faced with another disastrous start, the Red Wings’ best forwards came through to even their second-round series with San Jose.
Rallying from an early deficit, the Wings got game-breaking performances from Pavel Datsyuk and Henrik Zetterberg to secure a 3-2 victory this afternoon at Joe Louis Arena. Game 3 is Monday night in San Jose.
Zetterberg converted a pass from Datsyuk to draw the Wings within a goal after San Jose had taken a 2-0 lead five minutes into the first period, and Datsyuk finished a play begun by Zetterberg with 1:24 left in regulation.
Dan Cleary’s second short-handed goal of the playoffs tied the game at 2 just 1:23 into the third period.
“I think the difference today was we went to the net harder,” Dominik Hasek said after making 17 saves. “We score lucky goals, but the lucky goals we score because Jiri Hudler, he went to the net and he distract the goalie. Finally we got a little bit momentum and we were better team in second period and in the third we score shorthanded goal and … finally Pavel score the game-winning goal.”
