Hello all,
Earlier tonight I switched over nickandgreg.com to point to a kind of "beta" of the new site. I call it a beta because not nearly all of the intended functionality is there (pretty much all that is working right now is the barebones fic archive portion).
There are a lot of things that still need to be fixed. Some of them are glaring, some of them are not. The final styles haven't been implemented on all of the pages yet, so you'll probably encounter some pretty funky looking stuff every once in a while.
However, since it's been a few months since I disabled the ability to add new fic to the old site, and my schedule is getting worse and not better, I figured it was probably better that we have something out there that at least enables our users to once again be able to add fic than to hold off until I can maybe possibly fix everything that needs to be fixed.
I understand it has been frustrating for all of you. The site has been in a pitiful state for a couple of years now and I was always making promises that I'd get it back up and running and it would be better than before. I also always failed to live up to those promises.
I could try to make a lot of excuses, but the truth of the matter is it really does come down to me and a lack of motivation on my part. While I still watch and enjoy CSI, the Nick and Greg fandom in general is something that, truth be told, I haven't had all that much interest in since shortly after taking over "webmaster" duties of the site four(?) years ago. Plus, after writing code all day, the last thing I really wanted to do on my weekends was write even more code :-)
I'm not really sure what the feelings in the fandom were-- that when Kelly asked for donations back in May to keep the site up, and then the new version of the site never materialized, we had just taken the money and run? I don't know. I really do apologize to anyone who feels as if they've been wronged in that whole ordeal. I'll happily take the blame for it since I'm really the roadblock in this whole mess. It just never really crossed my mind that since people had given money, they actually expected a fully functional site sooner rather than later because the basic situation is this: That money went toward paying off a bill we had managed to rack up over the past year or two and any money required for the migration to this new site I've been working on forever will be coming out of my own pocket.
I really do appreciate everyone's patience. There might be some more craziness with the site over the next little while as I monitor bandwidth usage, try to actually do some work on it, etc.
Thanks,
--matt
