So, I've graduated from college. It was the most anti-climactic experience of my life. On Wednesday night, after playing poker with a bunch of friends, no one wanted to play a second game, and that's when it really hit me that I was done. I thought: Okay, so what am I going to do for the rest of the evening? . . . The rest of the week? . . . The rest of my LIFE?!?!?!
My boss is sweet enough to schedule no swim lessons during spring break, so for the next week, I have no classes and no work. I am so overwhelmed with a feeling of directionlessness! And all these worries have all invaded at once: Will I be making enough money? Will I finish my triathlon? Where am I going to STINT? That first night of being done with school, I came home, moped around, and then cried a little. Graduation-- what a bittersweet event.
Oh, and now, when I fill out forms, I can no longer say that I'm a full-time student, under occupation. Instead, I'm working, but my income falls below the poverty level (even though I'm living fine. I think the poverty levels are for families of 4.), so I qualify for discounted phone service! Isn't that funny?
So, I was way overly dramatic that first night. In reality, a lot of cool stuff is coming up. I'm leaving to go camping in Big Sur with Anna, Erin, and Rachel tomorrow, and we're going to spend a night and day in Monterey. We can walk around Carmel, go to the aquarium, go kayaking if weather permits . . . it's going to be awesome. I'll post pictures when we get back.
Oh, and Erin came over and gave me a graduation present, which was so THOUGHTFUL! All things that I LOVE: a pretty, purple journal; nice, dark chocolates; the second Would You Rather...? book; and a nuns having fun card! It was SO SWEET. That was the highlight of my experience as a university alumna.
That and playing Seafarers last night over chicken enchiladas.
(Kevin's ridiculously pathetic sheep island.)
And NEXT weekend I'll be in SLO competing in my first olympic distance triathlon! I just want to finish and have fun. I think I'll even bring a disposable camera with me on the bike leg of the race to capture some pretty scenery. Instead of trying to go fast, I'll be concentrating on simpler things, like remembering to clip out of my bike pedals before I stop, and the like. (By the way, I took a fall yesterday. I clipped out my right foot but leaned to my left. It wasn't bad, but that's the kind of thing I do NOT want to do on race day when there are spectators.)
Speaking of tri training, Clif Shot Bloks are awesome. They are carb-packed, electrolyte-replenishing fruit snacks! And they don't taste like chalk.
And before I end this I have to share something cute that one of my swim kids did yesterday. This little girl's bandaid fell off in the pool, and since she didn't want to litter in the pool, she stuffed her bandaid into her cap to throw away later! A little gross, but she's 4, so that's still young enough when you can pass of gross behavior as endearing and cute.
