I considered seeing the new update of Austen's Pride and Prejudice, but was discouraged by some pessimistic friends. I usually enjoy literate, british films, though (Sense and Sensibility and A Room With a View are lovely, lovely films), so I have decided to ignore their quips. I just hope that the filmmakers did not pander in order to cater to a teenage audience; luckily, from what I've heard, they have not. If I had the time, I would go alone -- it has recieved some glowing reviews and I believe that Ms. Knightley would make a perfect Elizabeth Bennet. I have my doubts, however, about the absense of Colin Firth. Can there be another Mark Darcy? Firth has played him enough, and mastered the role in the process. Regardless, I have not seen it -- but I most likely will catch it on DVD at some point.
This past week I saw Jarhead, Shopgirl and The Matador. Pride and Prejudice has a good chance of being superior to all three of those. I need to make time to go catch The Passenger and The Dying Gaul before they leave Kendall Square (but I doubt that is happening).
Thanks for reading the review; I always wonder if anyone makes their way to the back pages of the Beacon. Be sure to keep an eye out for an article of mine that should be published tomorrow. After seeming like a cynical prick in my last few reviews, I decided to simply recommend two of my favorites of 2005 (so far, at least) that I think most Emerson students will enjoy. Be sure to check it out, and then check out the films.
