When you leave nyack you realize when you have a "nyack day" its really special in comparison to the rest of the world. Well today I had a nyack day and it lifted my spirits like nothing else could.
I walked through town with matt in the sun hitting the general store, maria luisa, grandview. we sat out in the sun at art cafe and sipped on iced soy lattes and chatted about college, music, theater, all of that good stuff.
we stumbled into Twigs (which we all know has existed since fire was created) and talked to the owner. She is 97 years old and finally closing the store. My grandma has worked for her years ago and she was really happy to chat with a familiar person. You would think a 97 year old would be slightly delusional and slow but this woman was anything but. She told us her story - growing up in austria hungry in an orphanage. She completed first and second grade and then was put to work. during the depression she had to move to the united states after losing her first child. she was widowed at 35 and came to america ready to make a life for her two children. Two children who ended up going to julliard (violin) and columbia (med school) universities. She now has 6 grandchildren and 12 great grandchildren, runs the store by herself, lives on birchwood and paints when she has downtime. it was amazing to hear her tell the stories she had and have her even remember that i have three siblings around my age. It was cool to hear her history and know that I was somehow connected into it - to a certain extent at least.
I walked listening to my ipod (noah and the whale, and bishop allen. my summertime happy music) home after a 9 dollars purchase of a blue vest from general store. Now I have a little downtime to read out in the hammock next to my moms flower garden before babysitting tonight. I've enjoyed myself today and look forward to many days like this one.
