Spock is unimpressed with this update.

 1) Boston was fantastic. We ate some great food, gorged ourselves on hotel cable, and walked about 60 miles all over the metropolitan area. To escape the heat, we went to see Captain America (better than we expected, and more consistent, if less thought-provoking, than X Men: First Class), Another Earth (wonderful), and The Future (great, but incredibly sad. I cried.). We hit a bunch of bookstores (which is kind of a thing for me) and I fell in love with the MIT Press Bookstore in particular. I wish I had the time and mental discipline to read just about everything in that store. I wore holes into the soles of both shoes and returned to Chicago with a backpack full of books. Vacation mission accomplished.

2) Lollapalooza was...Lollapalooza. I'm not really a festival-goer (I get really claustrophobic in crowds), and there was really only one band playing on Sunday that I wanted to see. Which was the band who put us on the Guest List for the day, so no, I am not complaining one bit. We arrived in the afternoon while it was still blazing hot and practically steaming with humidity, and within the first hour we got hit by a huge rainstorm. We tried to hide under some trees, but there was no escape. We were soaked to the skin. The storm passed by the time our friends' band played, and we stood in a muddy, waterlogged field in a crowd of four thousand or more half-dressed, mud-streaked people and watched our friends rock out. I've seen them play a bunch of times over the years, and it's always amazing. Totally worth the mud in my shoes and getting hit by the second, even harder rainstorm on our way back to the El station.

3) Dinner with our friends tonight isn't happening. They were given some tickets to the Cubs game tonight and had one extra, so my husband is going and I'm staying home. I'm bummed not to see them, but it's all right. I'm glad they're hanging out with my husband. He's been kind of depressed lately, and I think this will do him good.

4) I was supposed to have coffee this afternoon with another friend who's passing through town, but when I had to reschedule by an hour in order to make an unexpected trip to the vet, he cancelled on me. Apparently he overbooked his trip. I think of him as a good friend, and he mostly is, but sometimes I get these little indications from him that I'm kind of a low priority for him. Maybe that's unfair of me, or maybe it's totally fair of him. Either way, disappointing.

5) My girl cat, Rabbit, had an abcess on her butt. Poor baby. I didn't see it until this morning, and since we were out of town for a week, I have no idea how long it's been there. It wasn't there when we left. She's also lost a bunch of weight over the course of the summer, going from a whopping 19 lbs to a much more slender 13 lbs. It happened pretty gradually, so between that and the way the weight loss was hidden by her long, fluffy fur, I didn't start worrying until recently. Both cats eat less in the summer. The vet thinks it may be hyperthyroidism - we're just waiting on the results of the bloodwork. Behaviorally, she's been totally normal. She's my sweetheart. Do me a favor and keep your fingers crossed for her, okay?

6) Also, wtf? Hyperthyroidism? My husband and I have both had thyroidectomies within the last three years. Is there something in the water? Some particular contamination in the pipes servicing our building?

7) I finally bought my plane tickets and reserved a hotel room for wincon . New Orleans is a go!

8) I start training for my internship tomorrow! \o/ \o/ \o/

9) I don't know why I'm numbering this post. Sorry. I'm done now.

social life? what social life?, rl: cats, rl: internship, wtf
