Fifty years from now, when you've been knighted by King William, and you are Britain's most beloved (albeit doddering) playwright, it will probably fall to (an even more doddering) me to remind the BBC viewers (in the four hour special devoted to your life) that you are not truly a Brit, and that I remember when you lived in New York (which was the name of the city before President Jeb Bush sold it to the Chinese to satisfy our debt, and they renamed it Papa Ooh Mao Mao City.)

Having flown Air India now and again (I won't regale you with the tale of sitting on a runway in Delhi for 10 hours without air conditioning - just think of the smell of decaying curry) I can assure you it is a lovely airline. This note of caution, however: the flight crew will not appreciate your efforts to organize a contest among the passengers to come up with the best finish to the limerick which begins: There was a young man from Madras.

And by the way - congratulations! This is truly great and good news.

Ha! I second this vision of the future! I've always wanted to be able to say "I knew him when..." about a doddering expatriate playwright. Go, Nickelchief, Go! Yay! : )
