icon: sandstorm

To mark the tenth anniversary of the invasion of Iraq, which was an obviously horrific mistake even before it began, I’ll offer the third installment in my "parade of userpics" series. (Not much of a monument, is it.)

The icon here is called “Sandstorm.” It was cropped from of a photograph of my second cousin, who did three tours in Iraq. I used it sparingly, only to accompany posts describing acute chaos. I just found the original photo:

That image is unmanipulated. As anoisblue remarked when I first posted it, "they look like astronauts on another planet."

My cousin survived his tours. He’s the one on the left. He has stories to tell about his comrades who didn’t come home, and they are terrifying beyond comprehension. I don't want to say too much more, now that I'm trying to keep this journal public again. But I guess I can say he's ... changed.

Ten years after we went storming in, for no valid reason, and the outrage still burns.
