i prefer the approach of someone talking about how they operated in a particular situation, talking about possible learnings they've gleaned from this and leaving the listener to reflect upon what vicarious lessons they might take away.

Isn't that what giving advice is?
...otherwise you are just telling the other person what to do.

I completely agree. Advice means giving them potentially new choices, otherwise it's instructions and that's not constructive.
