let's help O earn an A+ in sex ed policies

PHEW!  those have been some 8 looooong years...  so glad THAT"s over.....

today, on the anniversary of the Roe V. Wade decision, and only 2 days after the swearing-in of President Obama, many are blogging about our hopes for the future of choice in America.

most of us, like Whitney, know that children are our future.  and we know that good education is so important in creating adults that will be able to make sound choices for themselves.  as someone who works for a children's educational book publisher, and whose husband is a middle school teacher, and as someone who hopes to raise children in my lifetime, my hope is that parents and educators push Obama to quickly remove Bush's failed abstinence-only plans and replace with comprehensive sex education (and teach them not to use run-on sentences..).  luckily, i'm not the only one hoping for this.

but science and gym teachers shouldn't be the only messengers of information about sex to young people.  yes, i remember the new hormones when i was a teen.  but i also remember the total immersion in pop culture.  media critics should be offering insight to these hormonal pop culture fiends, too.

conservatives love to blame the "liberal" media for a number of their woes, and especially the influence on children.  while i certainly don't agree that all media is liberal, i agree it's influential.  but abstinence-only proponents lump together all sexually-charged images that young people see so often.  media criticism needs more emphasis along with comprehensive sex education, so kids can distinguish between this

and this

let's stop blaming michael cera and his girlfriend for not knowing how to use a condom.....  let's blame him for having friends that only see girls as dick wigglers.
