I have a file with all of the stuff I wrote in high school. I used to keep the stories and parts of stories primarily on the web (where they still exist) as broken pieces of my old website. It worked best that way because I've changed hard drives about four times since I wrote most of them, but one day last year I got scared that something might happen to them out there in the ether so I copied them all into one .doc. I haven't looked at them since, until just now.
It's strange - I expected them to be pretty awful, but they're not. The logic that they're based on is hopelessly flawed, but the ideas and the way they're expressed is thoroughly unembarrassing. It was a nice surprise. If I weren't so ashamed of the premises, I would post some here. Here's one that I liked, though:
'"What the hell happened to me?" I shout at him through the door. I close my eyes and use the counter to steady myself. His voice drifts in from far away, made thin by having to fit through the crack under the door. '
I'd be pretty happy with myself if I'd come up with that last image yesterday. All right, enough patting myself on the back.
