Time for another look ahead at what shows' casts can quake in their boots, expecting my scathing reviews over the next month or so:

6th December

Sir Ian McKellen plays King Lear. vanessaw is coming along, and has been instructed not to wolf-whistle when he gets his kit off.

13th December

The Haymarket Theatre Royal has followed the Old Vic's model and is presenting annual seasons of plays. The Restoration Comedy The Country Wife starring David Haig, Patricia Hodge and Toby Stephens is the first, and is meant to be very funny.

20th December

Matthew Bourne's Nutcracker! The exclamation mark is theirs, not mine. The only times I've ever been to the ballet have been to see Bourne's shows (the legendary all-male Swan Lake and WWII-themed Cinderella,) and clearly I have no plans to change that anytime soon.

26th December

For their Christmas presents I'm taking my mum and sister to Avenue Q. If you don't know about this show, welcome! You're clearly a new reader of my blog.

4th January

Hairspray's finally arrived in London and been rapturously received; a bunch of us are going to see what all the fuss is about.

10th January

I offered Vanessa, fast becoming my regular theatre-going companion, the chance to go to a Sunday performance, but she decided against it because that might mean her daughter would want to come along. Yes, it looks like Cinderella, a panto with a script by Stephen Fry and a cast of familiar faces, could be one of those kids' things that are too good to be wasted on kids.
