The first time Jethro had saved Jenny she had still been his Probie; inexperienced and unaware of the danger that had lain ahead of her.
In December 1998 the whole city was covered in snow.
White. Bright. Dangerous.
A young marine had been found dead near Norfolk; daily routine. As usual, they’d worked the crime scene with caution. Jenny was bagging evidence; he was shooting pictures, before all hell broke loose. Later, he couldn’t tell what had caught his attention, saving them both, before the bomb went off just seconds after he’d pulled Jenny away, covering her body with his.

They were working undercover in the Czech Republic, trying to infiltrate the Russian mafia, when Jethro again became Jenny’s guardian angel.
The evening had started like many others before. They acted like a young couple, enjoying their honeymoon, when actually there wasn’t much acting at all. In fact, they were having a hard time keeping their hands off each other long enough to not lose their suspects.
Around midnight they did.
One bullet hit Jenny’s thigh, but before the shooter could fire again Jethro had killed him. The scar on her leg never stopped reminded him of his close failure.

She was the Director of NCIS less than 24 hours, when she was already back on the street, trying to hunt down the man Gibbs was convinced had killed Agent Todd. Jenny had never doubted his gut, although this time she was having a hard time believing him. Still, she hadn’t hesitated, when he had called her. Even when it was long after hours and the whole situation was bringing back memories she was trying to forget.
She trusted him with her life, and the second she discovered the shooter he proved her she was doing it with good reason.

Being the Director of a Federal Agency was a hard and sometimes dangerous job. She had never understood why she needed her protection detail until the day James Dempsey had kidnapped her to free his brother.
She tried hard to think and act like an agent, talking her way out of the whole situation, but with every second that went by, her confidence in surviving had faded away.
That day Jethro saved her life twice; with what he had taught her all these years ago, and with the one splendid shot, he fired blindly from the trunk of his car.

They called her death "Suicide by Baddie", officially she'd died in a fire caused by a gas leakage. One way or the other, her death was inevitable. She was dying and not even Leroy Jethro Gibbs could've stopped it.
He had saved her so often in her life, and yet he couldn't save her in the end. He'd asked her many times and all she did was lie, pretending she was fine. Actually, she needed him, but not to helplessly stand by, unable to do anything. So she'd made sure this time his help would come too late - for her.
