Kate never wanted to have kids. It’d always scared her. But since she had Aaron, she felt different. Sometimes, she believed Aaron’s relation to Jack was the reason, why she loved him so much. But that wasn’t true. She’d loved him even before.
She loved him like a mother, and for Aaron she was it; when he called her ‘mommy’ it felt so right (and yet so wrong at the same time)
Aaron was her little angel and she’d do anything to protect him- if necessary even with her own life.
That was what made her his mother; nothing else.

But he also knew there was something more powerful working against him, leaving him powerless.
