~September 1998 ~

Burt was woken from his mid-afternoon nap by the ringing of the telephone. “Kim.” he called out, “Kim, aren't you going to get that?”

Kim yelled back from somewhere upstairs, “I'm in the middle of changing Emily. Can't you take care of it for once?”

Burt grumbled his assent and leaned over to the side table, grabbing the handset, “Hello.”

“Is Mr. Hummel there?” an official sounding voice on the other end asked.

Burt thought it might be a creditor, but answered anyway, “This is him.”

“Mr. Hummel. I'm Captain Jordan Lewis with the LAPD and I'm calling to inform you that your wife and children have been in an accident. It would-”

Burt cut the gentleman off, “What kind of accident? Are they okay? Where are they? Can-”

“Mr. Hummel,” the captain said, “I need you to calm down. They're being taken to Cedars-Sinai right now. It'd probably be best if you can get down there as quickly as possible. Do you need someone to come pick you up?”

“Uh...no, my sister-in-law can take me. Cedars-Sinai you said, right?”

“Yes, sir. I'm sorry about your family.”

Burt dropped the phone, a numbness falling over his whole body. He wasn't sure what he would do without Christine and the kids. They were his whole life, his everything. His thoughts were interrupted when Kim came down the stairs.

“Burt, are you okay?” she asked, looking concerned.

He shook his head, unsure if he could formulate the words, “Christine and the kids were in an accident, we need to go to the hospital.”

“Oh my god. Burt, are you serious? Let's go, then.” Kim shouted, jumping into action, “Sammy, get down here right now.”

Kim ushered her kids outside and buckled them into their car seats and then she went back in for Burt. She nudged him gently, slipping her arm under his and helping him stand up, “Come on, Burt. Christine needs you.” Her words seemed to help a little bit because he took more of his own weight and moved his feet of his own volition.

As Kim drove to the hospital, Burt leaned against the passenger side window, tears streaking silently down his face. He didn't yet know the fate of his family, but he felt like his world was falling apart just thinking of the possibilities. At a stoplight, Kim placed a hand on his knee, “Things are going to turn out fine Burt. I called Greg and he's going to meet us there. We're here for you Burt, no matter what happens.”

Twenty minutes later, Kim was pulling up outside the emergency room doors and Burt was scrambling out of the car. He rushed inside and to the sign-in desk.

The stocky older woman sitting there looked up at him expectantly, “Can I help you sir?”

“My wife and sons were in an accident. The police said they were brought here. I need to see them.”

“Well, sir, I'm going to need their names first. We're a very busy-”

“Christine, Dominic and Kurt Hummel.” Burt said, cutting the woman's spiel short. “My boys are five and three, I need to see them. I need to know my wife's okay.”

The woman had turned to her computer, typing in the information Burt had given her. Finding the information, she called over one of the residents, “Sir, this is Emily, one of our residents. If you go with her, she can tell you how your family is doing. Emily, this is Mr. Hummel.”

Emily nodded and motioned for Burt to follow her. She took him to an empty room and asked him to sit down.

Burt refused, “NO, if I sit down, all you're going to give me is bad news. I need you to tell me that they're all okay.”

Emily nodded and started, “Burt, I'm sorry, but not all the news I have is good. It really might be better for you if you sit down.” When he refused again, she continued, taking a deep breath, “Unfortunately, Mr. Hummel, when the ambulance arrived, your son Dominic was already fading fast. We tried everything we could, but we lost him.” The young woman braced herself as Burt stumbled forward into her arms.

“No, my son, he can't be dead.” Burt cried out. He allowed himself to be guided back into the chair he had been offered earlier, “What about Christine? And Kurt?”

Emily offered him her hand to hold and continued, “Your wife's injuries were also very severe and she is in surgery right now. Kurt was very lucky. He was strapped into his car seat in the backseat and only sustained a deep scratch on his forehead from a piece of glass and some bruising on his clavicles from the seat's straps. I can take you to see him right now if you want, while we wait for your wife to get out of surgery.”

Burt nodded, the numb feeling creeping over him again, “My sister-in-law and her husband. They're supposed to be coming too. Greg and Kim Warner.”

Emily nodded, wrapping an arm around his shoulders and leading him down two doors to Kurt's room. “I'll let the front desk know that they can be shown here to Kurt's room. You're going to need their support right now.” She guided him to the chair beside the bed and left the room.

Burt sat down heavily. His brain was still trying to process the information. Dominic was gone. His bright, little boy who played football with him and couldn't wait for Grandpa to teach him how to swing a bat. How could that little life be gone? And Christine. His darling beautiful Christine was in surgery and they weren't sure if things were going to be okay. Then there was Kurt. Tiny, quiet Kurt who had spent every day running around in those plastic Barbie heels they had gotten him for his birthday. He looked even smaller and paler than usual lying in this big hospital bed beside him.

“Daddy?” a small voice broke him from his introspection.

Burt turned to look at Kurt's face and saw that the little boy's eyes were half-open, blearily looking at him. “Hey, kiddo. How ya feeling?”

“I hurt, Daddy. I hurt.” the little boy whined, eyes brimming with tears.

Burt took his son's hand and pushed the call button on his bedside table. “Daddy's gonna make it okay, baby. Just hold on.” Kurt nodded and closed his eyes again. When the nurse arrived, she brought with her Greg and Kim. They settled Sam and Emily on the window seat while the nurse gave Kurt another dose of pain medication through his IV.

When she had gone, Burt turned to his family to give them the news, “Christine's in surgery and Dominic...he's....”

Kim came over and wrapped him up in a hug. “We know. The nurse told us. Burt, I am so sorry. But we've got to be strong. For Kurt and Christine. Okay?”

Burt just nodded into her neck, pulling his wife's sister close and taking comfort from her familiarity. Greg came over to join the hug too and the three of them stood there, unsure of what was going to happen next.

The three adults had all somehow fallen asleep in the uncomfortable chairs scattered around Kurt's bed. Therefore, when the nurse came in to update them on Christine's condition, they were all a little startled. The woman looked apologetic as Burt stood up to shake her hand. “It's no problem, how's Christine?”

“Sir, I'm very sorry, but her internal organs had sustained too much damage. We were unable to save her. I'm terribly sorry.”

Burt sank to his knees on the hospital floor, “No, no. She can't be gone. She can't be.” Kim and Greg crowded around him again as the woman left the room. He could feel Kim's tears on soaking through his shirt even as he sobbed into her hair.

“It's gonna be okay, Burt. We're gonna get through this.” Greg started, before Burt shook him off and disentangled himself from the petite woman.

“No, Greg,” He started angrily, “It's not going to be okay. I just lost my wife and son and I'm left with a three year old fairy and no we're not going to get through this. I have to get through this and I think you two need to go.”

Kim started to protest, but was distracted by her own children starting to fuss and she realized that maybe it would be better for her family and herself to leave. She walked over to Greg, Emily on her hip, “We should go,” she whispered, “He's not thinking right now and he's going to need us when he gets home.” Greg scooped Sam up into his arms and nodded his agreement. As they left, they spoke to one of the kind older ladies at the nurse's station about what was happening. They assured the couple that they would be sending in a grief councilor and the two left.
When his in-laws left, Burt sank back down into his chair by Kurt's bed. He took the tiny hand lying on top of the covers in his own and held it. He thought about how both of their worlds had just been turned upside down. He knew that it was up to him to make everything okay for the little boy in the big bed. His brain began formulating a plan.
