The Return of the Pesky Blog Sociologist

How do you go about making moral choices in your everyday life? Is this something you have written about in your blog?

If so, I would love to have a read as part of my PhD research in Sociology.

Hi there!!

Thanks for your interest in participating in the project and for the material that you sent me. I really appreciate it.

I had a brief read of your blog and I think you have some really interesting material on broad moral issues, particularly as they relate to business ethics. However, can you think of any posts where you've written about a moral decision you've been personally trying to work out in your everyday life - a situation, if you like, where you've been really grappling with the question of 'what to do'?

You mention that you felt morally obliged to speak out in class, is this something that you blogged about?

If not, maybe you could blog about a 'moral moment' that has already occurred but you haven't recorded - or even maybe something in the future. If something pops up, write about it, and if you wish, let me know. I hope that doesn't sound all too demanding!

Another option might be too look for posts where you've discussed a general moral strategy or orientation - for example, some people write in their blogs about the importance of helping others, of protecting the self, of practicing random acts of kindness, or doing 'good things' because it makes you feel good. So it can be quite general and abstract or more specific and concrete. Both are fine as well.

Regards,

Nick

Found two posts that might be useful - the first is not so much about a moral issue but a crossroads in life and the need to make a decision. The question I used to arrive at the choice of the best thing to do is also very useful when deciding matters of right or wrong
Ostalgie

Then there's a post where I talk about some of the other quotes or questions that I often use as a guide when making decisions and briefly mention a decision that while not so much about right or wrong - was more about choosing the easiest and most convenient option or the one that would enable me to maintain self respect even thought it would result in a rather large opportunity cost that I could not really afford
The Search for Security is the root of all evil

(I do have some posts with the tag 'moral maze' some of which I've linked to already. Will add any more that are relevant when I come across them)

just remembered - a post with the evil details of one of the most difficult decisions I've had to make recently - one that resulted in being tossed off the roster for ten days as a spiteful payback but which was worth it anyway as it pissed off the boss so so much but there was nothing she could do about it since I'd done nothing immoral or illegal but simply served her up a taste of her own rather nasty medicine

Thank you so much for all your great efforts - really fantastic stuff.

There is some really great material in your blog and I would love to have the opportunity to further unpack some of the moral issues that you raise in the context of an online interview - but only if that's ok with you. To do this we would use a one-to-one chat program like MSN or ICQ.

I am planning to conduct the interviews between the beginning of July and the end of August. If you're interested in participating, let me know of a date and time that is convenient for you. Evenings and weekends are ok with me.

Conducting the interview over subsequent time periods is also ok. For example, you might want to do two 30 minute sessions over a couple of days. The choice is yours.

Before making a final decision to participate I urge you to read the information sheet provided on the research website. http://www.utas.edu.au/sociology/students/hookway/project_info.html

Best wishes,

Nick Hookway
