Kato Shigeaki couldn’t sleep. He tried to close his eyes but failed miserably. His mind was full with questions. It’s been a month since they celebrated Tegoshi’s birthday and it’s also been a month Ryo seemed different than his usual self. Ryo still called him but Shige wasn’t THAT naive. He sensed something was wrong with Ryo. He wanted to ask but he was afraid. Afraid of what he did not sure. Reality? What reality?
He realized Ryo couldn’t always stay by his side due to his work. Ryo already warned him about his job and Shige completely understood and accepted that. He only wanted Ryo to call him whenever he could. Because he was happy enough just to hear his lover's voice and told him unimportant things. At least Ryo was thinking about him then. But lately, his calls were just … how he could say … lame and cold. He felt it was only an obligation that Ryo called him, not because he wanted to. Ryo had changed and he didn’t need to be a genius to realize that.
“Ryo, what's wrong with you?"
Shige couldn’t help but that question kept lingering in his head. He hated to doubt Ryo but he was so foolishly in love with him. Since he landed his eyes on the older one in the shinkansen at their first meeting, he probably already fell in love with him. He always felt insecure, always afraid that Ryo would leave him for another guy. Because it was him who confessed first. Once again, not that he doubted his lover's love toward him but that feeling kept nagging him lately. Feeling that Ryo had changed. Feeling that Ryo changed because of another guy. He wanted Ryo to be his and his only. He was THAT selfish.
"Ryo, do you really love me with your heart?”
His thought of Ryo was distracted by a mail tone from his mobile phone. He lazily opened his phone. It was a short message from Yamapi.
“I have to talk to Yucchan tomorrow.” he said to himself.

Shige waited for Tegoshi near the university gate. He wasn’t sure if Tegoshi had classes or not that day. He had tried calling him several times but never did reach him even once. He already waited for an hour before he saw the small figure approaching him.
“Yo! I have been waiting for you. Where've you been?” greeted Shige and waved his hand.
Tegoshi stopped at his track. He was wondering why Shige waited for him.
"Can we talk?" asked Shige once he was in front of the smaller.
“I’m sorry. I have a class to run,” rejected Tegoshi and walked past Shige as he realized something.
“Chotto matte!” Shige grabbed his shoulder. Tegoshi shoved Shige’s hand lazily. He knew what the other was up to. Shige looked directly into his eyes.
“What?” snapped Tegoshi, looking back at Shige.
“Why are you always running away? I just need to ask what happened between you and Yamashita-kun?”
“It’s none of your business.”
“Why are you hurting him? I can’t believe you are that selfish.”
“He told you?”
“No, he just mailed me that you two are over and he needs time to be alone.”
“It’s not me who ended it.” Tegoshi shrugged and walked away.
Shige was getting impatient with his childish action. Shige ran after him and dragged the other to the secluded park nearby. He pushed the smaller boy to a tree. He hated violence but he needed to teach Tegoshi a little manner.
“Ouch! What exactly do you want?” angered Tegoshi, nursing his shoulder.
“Tell me why did you ditch Yamashita-kun!”
“I already said it’s none of your business!”
“Yamashita-kun is like a brother to me. If he got hurt then it became my business.”
“Wow, brotherly love!” mocked Tegoshi sarcastically.
“Hey, watch your mouth! I was wrong. I thought you were nice innocent boy but it turned out you are just a selfish little bitch!”
Tegoshi was surprised with Shige’s words, his eyes widened. He wanted to yell back and all but then he realized it was pointless. It would just worsen the situation. In other hand, Shige regretted everything he had said. He didn’t know why he treated Tegoshi that way. It was just ... He didn't know what's gotten into him.
“Yucchan, I’m sorry. I didn’t mean it. I just don’t want anyone getting hurt. I care for you and I care for Yamashita-kun too.” Shige uttered his apology.
“Shige, it’s not your fault. The things with me and Yamashita-kun, it’s just not working out. I can’t love him back.”
“But why? You two are perfect for each other. Why you can’t love him?”
“I can’t love him because I still love my ex-boyfriend.”
Shige failed to understand. A lot of questions popped out in his head. Suddenly he felt tired. He remembered he missed breakfast this morning as he rushed out of his house to wait for Tegoshi. His body was getting weaker. He could sense it. Droplets of blood fell from his nose. Dark red bloods. It fell nonstop.
“Shige, you are bleeding. Are you okay?” panicked Tegoshi and quickly passed his handkerchief to Shige’s nose. Shige didn’t care for his nose. He was frantically looking for something in his jacket. His pocket. His bag. He couldn’t find what he was looking for.
“Ah shit, I forget my medicine!” before he passed out and fell into Tegoshi.
“SHIGE? SHIGE? OH MY GOSH! ANYONE HELPP!!!” cried out Tegoshi still holding unconscious Shige in his arms.

Nishikido Ryo never felt so scared in his life before. Soon after he got call from Tegoshi about Shige’s condition, he excused himself from his work and hurried himself to the hospital where Shige had taken to. The university clinics didn’t have enough medical equipment to help Shige so they quickly transferred him to nearest hospital by ambulance.
Ryo asked for Shige in the receptionist. They said he was still in I.C.U room. They pointed the direction for him and he walked as fast as he could to get there. He saw Tegoshi and Shige’s parents sitting in the waiting bench outside the room. Tears fell nonstop from Shige’s mother as his father held her tight and calmed her. Tegoshi stood up once he saw Ryo was coming.
“Nishikido-kun, Shige …”
“What happened? Sensei, is he okay?” asked Ryo ignoring Tegoshi to a doctor who just came out from the I.C.U room. Shige’s parents also stood up and waited for the doctor’s answer. They obviously have the same questions as Ryo.
“Uhm, it’s just a fatigue. He needs a good rest and avoid stress.” explained the young doctor with a smile.
“So, nothing bad will happen to him, Koyama-sensei?” asked Shige’s mother.
“For a time being, yes he will be okay. He will be transferred from I.C.U room once he awakes. So don’t worry.”
“Arigatou, sensei!” Shige's parents and Ryo bowed their gratitude toward Koyama sensei.
“No problem. You all can visit him but one by one please.”
They all nodded for his instruction.
He said again, “Ah, otousan, please follow me. I need you to fill out some forms.”
So Shige’s father followed Koyama-sensei. His mother preparing herself to visit Shige and leaving only Ryo and Tegoshi outside the I.C.U room in awkward situation.
“Yokatta ne, Shige is alright.” Tegoshi broke the silence.
“Tegoshi, what exactly happened? Why Shige collapsed?”
“He … I-I think it’s my fault, we had a little fight.”
“You are still selfish, aren’t you?”
“I’m sorry.” Soft tears began to form in Tegoshi’s eyes. Ryo sighed. He hated to see Tegoshi cried. If only he told him the truth before, none of this incident would have happened.
He patted the younger boy’s shoulder and talked to him in soft voice, “It’s not your fault, Tegoshi. You didn’t know Shige is sick.”
“W-What? Shige is sick?”
“Yes, he has leukemia. It’s not really serious though, he just discovered the disease early this year. He already began the treatment and so far it’s a good progress. He even didn’t tell his parents or Yamashita.”
“But he told you?”
“Nope, that stubborn idiot also didn’t tell me. I found his medicine and after I forced him to tell me the truth, he finally told me about his illness. But he made me promised I won’t tell anyone about this.”
“But I’m his best friend, he can tell me anything.”
“Well, he didn’t want you to be worried over him. Beside he almost had been cured from it. And I want to stay by his side and support him through this.”
Hearing Ryo’s words made Tegoshi realized why he couldn’t win Ryo’s heart again. He finally knew the reason why Ryo wouldn’t leave Shige. It hurt to know the truth. It hurt to know Ryo chose Shige over him. It hurt so much that it almost made him feel nothing but pain in his heart.
“So Tegoshi, you know my reason. I can’t be your boyfriend anymore. Please let me take care Shige. He needs me more than you right now,” Ryo continued.
Tegoshi didn’t say any words, he just nodded weakly. Both of them laid their back on the wall in silence. Both were drowned in their own thoughts.
Shige’s mother came out from I.C.U room. She bowed to Ryo and Tegoshi. Her expression was still the same as before, full of worried and sadness. Ryo and Tegoshi bowed back politely.
“Tegoshi-kun? Do I get your name right?” asked Shige’s mother to Tegoshi.
“Ah hai, yes, my name is Tegoshi Yuya.”
“Thank you for saving Shigeaki. I didn’t know he has leukemia, I’m such a bad mother.” She began to cry. Tegoshi was speechless, he didn’t know what to say.
“Don’t blame yourself Kato-san. It’s his own decision to keep his illness from you. He doesn’t want to get worried,” reassured Ryo.
“Are you Nishikido-kun? Shigeaki once told me about you. I’m glad that he found a great man like you. Please take care Shigeaki from now onwards.” She bowed to Ryo.
“I will always stay by his side, Kato-san.”
Tegoshi felt another pang of pain in his heart. He wanted to escape himself away from this awkward situation. He thought he could accept Ryo’s decision but it was still hard for him to bear it after all.
“Kato-san, Nishikido-kun, I’m sorry I have to go now. I will come back tomorrow.”
“Ahh okay, Tegoshi-kun! Thanks once again!” replied Shige’s mother. Ryo didn’t say anything but his eyes showed disappointment. Tegoshi refused to look into his eyes. He bowed to both of them and walked away.
Ryo couldn’t help but feeling guilty. He knew he hadn’t been a good boyfriend to Shige lately. His meeting with Tegoshi again somehow affected their relationship without he realized it. He always used his work as excuses for not meeting or calling Shige regularly. Deep inside he knew he was in a big dilemma. He promised Shige he would stay by his side but in the other hand; he couldn’t deny that he still loved Tegoshi. He felt helpless and useless. He didn’t want to hurt anyone but at the end it was himself that hurt the most. No, not only himself. In the end he would just hurt the three of them.

It turned out that Shige’s sickness was getting worst. He woke up but his leukemia illness has taken most of his strength. Stress and depression also made him dropping his will to heal. He had been transferred from I.C.U. but his body was still weak. Koyama-sensei shook his head after he examined him. Ryo and Shige’s parents looked at him worriedly.
“I’m sorry, but his health is dropped drastically. We can’t do anything. Regular treatment is no more useful for his case. He needs surgery soon.”
“Surgery? But he’s the only child, sensei! How we could find the right donor for him?” argued his mother.
“Donor doesn’t have to come from his sibling, Kato-san. You and husband also can be his transplant donor if it matched.” explained Koyama-sensei.
“Am I able to be his donor, sensei?” asked Ryo all the sudden.
“I don’t think so Nishikido-kun. Usually only blood relatives who are able to be transplant donor for leukemia illness.”
Ryo frowned. He hated being useless. He turned his head to Shige who was sleeping. Such innocent sleeping face. He held Shige’s hand, kissed it and cried. His mother also cried upon seeing Ryo’s affection toward his son. She couldn’t deny it was weird to see such relationship between two people in the same gender, especially if one involved his own son. But she loved his son so much and she only wanted Shige to be happy.
Her husband asked her out to check whether one of them could be Shige’s transplant donor or not. Soon after they closed the door, Shige slowly opened his eyes. He was confused to see Ryo was crying.
“Ryo-chan, why you are crying?” asked Shige weakly.
“Shige, are you okay? How do you feel?”
“I feel tired. Uhm, where’s Yucchan?”
“Tegoshi? I don’t know, he said he would come today but he hasn’t showed up yet.”
“I said terrible things to him, I want to say sorry.”
“Ssshhh, don’t force yourself too much, you need rest.”
“Ne Ryo, lately I have been thinking. About Yucchan and you.”
“What do you mean?”
“Are you his ex-boyfriend?”
“H-How do you know?”
“An instinct I guess. Both of you were acting strange since the meeting at the karaoke. Yucchan also broke up with Yamashita-kun, saying that he still loves his ex. You also were kinda distant to me all of sudden.”
“I’m sorry Shige. I didn’t mean to hide this from you. It was over between me and Tegoshi. I’m with you right now and I will always stay by your side.”
“You don’t have to force yourself, Ryo-chan. I’m hopeless here, my time is almost up.”
“Don’t say such thing, you will be cured, and we will be happy together again.”
“Ryo, do you love me?”
“Of course I love you!” he leaned forward and kissed Shige softly.
Mean while outside the hospital room, Tegoshi dropped his tears to the floor. He kept his promise to come back but when he was about to open the door, he overheard everything. He just stood there, registered every words that Ryo said to Shige. He realized it was over between them. He finally let Ryo go. He sincerely wished them happiness.
“Yucchan is so kind, I also want to have a long life so I can be with my boyfriend forever.” said Shige with dreamy eyes.
“I will pray for your happiness, Shige,” said Tegoshi with sincere tone.
“Arigatou, Yucchan!”
The conversation between him and Shige on their first day meeting lingered in his mind. For once, Tegoshi Yuya wasn’t selfish. For once, he gave up his happiness to someone else, and that someone else was his best friend, Kato Shigeaki.

She couldn’t deny it was weird to see such relationship between two people in the same gender, especially if one involved his own son. But she loved his son so much and she only wanted Shige to be happy.
Her husband asked her out to check whether one of them could be Shige’s transplant donor or not. Soon after they closed the door, Shige slowly opened his eyes. He was confused to see Ryo was crying.
“Ryo-chan, why you are crying?” asked Shige weakly.
“Shige, are you okay? How do you feel?”
“I feel tired. Uhm, where’s Yucchan?”
“Tegoshi? I don’t know, he said he would come today but he hasn’t showed up yet.”
“I said terrible things to him, I want to say sorry.”
“Ssshhh, don’t force yourself too much, you need rest.”
“Ne Ryo, lately I have been thinking. About Yucchan and you.”
“What do you mean?”
“Are you his ex-boyfriend?”
“H-How do you know?”
“An instinct I guess. Both of you were acting strange since the meeting at the karaoke. Yucchan also broke up with Yamashita-kun, saying that he still loves his ex. You also were kinda distant to me all of sudden.”
“I’m sorry Shige. I didn’t mean to hide this from you. It was over between me and Tegoshi. I’m with you right now and I will always stay by your side.”
“You don’t have to force yourself, Ryo-chan. I’m hopeless here, my time is almost up.”
“Don’t say such thing, you will be cured, and we will be happy together again.”
“Ryo, do you love me?”
“Of course I love you!” he leaned forward and kissed Shige softly.
Mean while outside the hospital room, Tegoshi dropped his tears to the floor. He kept his promise to come back but when he was about to open the door, he overheard everything. He just stood there, registered every words that Ryo said to Shige. He realized it was over between them. He finally let Ryo go. He sincerely wished them happiness.
“Yucchan is so kind, I also want to have a long life so I can be with my boyfriend forever.” said Shige with dreamy eyes.
“I will pray for your happiness, Shige,” said Tegoshi with sincere tone.
“Arigatou, Yucchan!”
The conversation between him and Shige on their first day meeting lingered in his mind. For once, Tegoshi Yuya wasn’t selfish. For once, he gave up his happiness to someone else, and that someone else was his best friend, Kato Shigeaki.
