[Private to Arya]

[Between the file and "Cat"s presence on the Barge, Naoto is already 99% sure who she's been assigned to. Comm is propped up to give a good, professional angle, and Arya will be able to see her file - which already has hand-written tabs sticking out of it (sorry Arya they're in Japanese) - in clear view, as well as Naoto's usual ( Read more... )

Of course.

You may call me Jon.

Excuse me, it's a habit of mine. Jon, then.

Your sister Arya has been assigned to me as an inmate, though I'm sure you were already aware of that. I'd like to meet with you when your own duties allow it. From what I can gather, you two were - are - close, and I have the sense you're going to be crucial in her rehabilitation.

I'll offer you what aid I can, when I can.

If you don't mind my asking, does her file say how she died?

Thank you. I expect it must be difficult for there to be an outsider involved, but I'll do my best by her. I don't think she's had the best impression of me: before she was assigned to me, I let my curiosity about her show forth, and for a girl who's been through what she has... it wasn't welcome, I could tell.

It does. [She frowns slightly, as if her face shows less than what she's thinking.] She was poisoned by the monks of the temple she sought training at, though it never states whether this was accidental or as some sort of punishment. I'm not yet aware if she knows this, and am not sure how to present it to her. She's requested her file, but...

She isn't going to believe you easily. The idea occurred to me shortly after she arrived. Perhaps hearing it from another will help to show her that House in Braavos isn't the best place for her.

Hopefully so. There are plenty of ways for one's mind to twist the plain truth, even when it's been already laid straight. Even if she accepts it as true, it might raise more questions in her. But I think if she can accept it - if she learns that it's not just one of us telling her, but it's information we wouldn't have any reason to know about... that may help. So I plan on leaving her file intact when I give it to her.

My greatest concern isn't the House, though, but what it taught her. I think she needs to be willing to acknowledge who she is before she can change what she wants. She... doesn't seem to want to be the person you knew, and while I don't expect her to become her again... I think you understand what I'm trying to express.

I don't expect her to be the little girl I knew at Winterfell. She's getting older. One can't stay a child forever.

I can't say I understand why she would want to be no one.

Of course she isn't. You can't just pretend three years' worth of suffering never happened. It's important to who she is, but I want to help her work that into her identity so that she's still Arya, not Cat or whoever she's decided to become aboard ship, or this silent assassin she wants to be.

I was in a similar position at her age- trying to erase myself, not an assassin in training- and I think the methods the people close to me used to help me past that might be effective with her. They reminded me of what my goal had been in trying to become another and taught me how I could reach it as myself, not this false image I'd put up. Work's nowhere near done once she's able to accept that, but do you think that would be a wise first step with her?

Yes. She needs to understand who she is before she can make amends for her actions.

[She's not entirely sure she likes how he's phrased that - yes, she's done wrong, but she isn't sure Arya needs to "make amends" so much as change her way of thinking - but she's going to try and get out what he means a little more subtly.] What concerns you the most?

That she doesn't want to be Arya Stark anymore.

Has she told you why?

Not in so many words. I imagine what she saw in King's Landing had much to do with it.

...I'd want to hide myself, in that situation. I've read about it.

I'm very sorry. [Ned was Jon's father too SO FAR AS SHE KNOWS.]

[Sob this mystery will forever haunt me :c]

Hiding is different than denying who you are.

She may still believe she has to. Do you know if there are any residents here she's expressed fear of?

For instance, I know nothing about your inmate's place in your world.
