Work and the wisdom of the mid life woman

Jan 16, 2024 23:22

Today at work I was surrounded by and supported by wise women. I sat in the "business garden" (aka more plants, curvy desks, hotly contested places) with the DEI team - I'm an honorary member, thanks to all the creative learning projects I've done with them.

I met two people IRL who I had only spoken to on calls, and then I met someone who I had worked with way back in the day. She left in 2019 and is now a contractor...Was so wonderful to just randomly meet her again :-)

Then I had coffee with a dear friend, then lunch with another friend. And here's where the mid-life wisdom makes its mark :-)

Said friend had booked a table for us at the asian noodle place across the way. For 1145 and ...this is important.... 'cos all swissies march from their desks for lunch at 12, so we tried to get ahead of the crowd.
We take our seats and the menus, and lo and behold, out the door a long queue of 12 midday people firns,,,

Smugly we waited for someone to take our order. The tables around us filled up.
Twice I met the waitresses eye so we could order, twice she said she'd need to send her colleague.
Now our whole table is full of people. It's busy, eng and loud.

We try a third time, still no joy, and then the same server comes over, ignores us and and starts taking the order of the people on our table who arrived 15 minutes after us. THE OUTRAGE.

As one woman, we look each other, nod and rise from the table, sweeping our way out of the restaurant. Such a small action, but it felt so good!

I was so proud of us. And then we went to our work canteen, which was rammed, and ate the swiss version of Rice Cashmir (it has grapes and mango in it!). And talked and talked until the work canteen cleared again :-)
Eventually we went back to work...

Moral of this tale: Never trifle with a hungry woman in her mid years of power, who reserved, got there early and was then ignored and overlooked ...

friends, work
