New Year, New (voluntary) Role!

I am so thrilled to have been elected onto the Learning Network Board of Directors.

I've been a member since 2015 and their support and mentoring helped me take on my first leadership role and taught me loads about eLearning. I've been honoured to have spoken twice at their conference, in November 2018 on "A Year in the Life of an eLearning Manager" and then in 2019 I chaired their panel on leadership.

This was my pitch...

My name is Helen Palmer, I've gained so much through my membership of the Learning Network that I'd love the chance to become a Director of the Network to work and deliver on your behalf.

Who am I? I'm a Learning and Development Manager who's spent most of her career in a global organization in Switzerland. I've been here so long that my family and I became Swiss in 2020. I'm passionate about learning and love managing and leading a global team. The work we do touches everyone in the organisation and our key priority is to keep the user front and centre. During my career I've volunteered for a befriending Charity in London and was on the executive committee of a large networking organization in Zurich, so I know how much work and collaboration it takes behind the scenes to run a successful network organisation. Through my professional and volunteering background, I have much experience and ideas to share with the network.

I'm most interested in the Mentoring Director position. I've been lucky enough to have received mentoring from this organization, as well as from senior leaders in my current job. I've also mentored junior members of staff and have set up mentoring schemes at work. I believe that a successful mentoring relationship is built on self reflection and thoughtful questions from the mentee, supported by skillful listening and sharing by the mentor.

I firmly believe that I can fully contribute to the Network, whilst working and living in Switzerland. I understand that the board works and meets remotely and if chosen, I would make sure to attend the most important network events in person. I also think that my experiences outside of the UK will bring a valuable additional perspective to the board.

Outside of work I read far too many books and drink more tea than is good for me, and am partial to a long walk (or slow run) with a good podcast! Thank you for considering me.
