Becoming Swiss!

Nov 23, 2020 15:16

Our thoughts about becoming swiss started in 2015 .... we knew that we were nearly at the magic 12 years of being in the same canton and that we would be eligible to apply.

We go the letter from Kanton Zürich in 2016, but it took us a while to get organized. I also really need to think about why we were doing this. It wasn't just an admin thing, for me it's a bit deal to apply for citizenship!

Anyway, we started filling out forms end of last year and getting certified copies of EVERYTHING official within a 3 month period. We sent everything off and didn't hear anything for a LONG time.
Then we took our swiss test and interview in Dec 2019 and the nice lady hinted that we would hear something official in summer 2020. Well, then COVID happened...

In the meantime, summer 2020 was our massive Swiss Staycation and we swotted up on our swissy-ness :-)
We took in Zurich, Altdorf, Solothurn, & Berne, Map on the living room wall showing Switzerland and Kanton Zürich and all our stops...

We finally got our official paperwork through on Oct 16th 2020, including our "certificate of swiss newss :-)
And now we've just voted for the first time in Switzerland (and for me in the last 15 years, since I lost the right to vote in the UK).
Diccon Bewes wrote a great blog post about voting here, I wish had read before I voted the first time. I was quite confused...

And now we're just waiting to apply for our ID cards and passports!
