I CARRY YOUR HEART -- chunky fat book
... an original art page swap, limited to 15 people.
why?
i have been enamored of heart imagery, both anatomical and whimsical, for a very long time. the heart is a central image for me for personal and aesthetic reasons. red is my favorite color. blood is red. the heart is central to a person, literally and figuratively. if your heart doesn't work, you have a problem! and many members of my family have had wounded and failing hearts. i have seen operation scars (on my father and others) and video of my mother's heart pumping when she had a diagnostic check done (all clear). i've listened to heartbeats and doodled hearts on post-it notes. there was a time when people believed the heart lived in the soul. and then, of course, there's this poem by e.e. cummings:
i carry your heart with me
i carry your heart with me(i carry it in
my heart)i am never without it(anywhere
i go you go,my dear; and whatever is done
by only me is your doing,my darling)
i fear
no fate(for you are my fate,my sweet)i want
no world(for beautiful you are my world,my true)
and it's you are whatever a moon has always meant
and whatever a sun will always sing is you
here is the deepest secret nobody knows
(here is the root of the root and the bud of the bud
and the sky of the sky of a tree called life;which grows
higher than the soul can hope or mind can hide)
and this is the wonder that's keeping the stars apart
i carry your heart(i carry it in my heart)
-- e.e. cummings
what?
+ 15 pages, each original artwork by you. pages can be similar or entirely different. anything you like inspired by this poem. add pockets and secret hidden text if you like. be wild, be crazy, be experimental!
+ please feel free to include small envelopes with tiny artworks in them, long crazy embellishments, multi layered pages, etc.
+ measurements of the page: 4x4 inches. please keep 1 inch on the LEFT side free of hard or sticky (tape) embellishment or ribbon or sewing. that way i can bind it without fear of clogging my puncher.
+ no digital reproductions or color copies of originals, please.
+ please, no vintage photographs! your own work only.
+ if you use any sort of sticky substance or acrylic medium, please spray finish so your page doesn't stick to anyone else's. (or include cut-to-size glassine or wax paper leaflets with each page).
+ we want to see marks made by your hand, embellishments crafted by you.
+ make art of the front and back, please remember that when the book is open, and someone is looking at one page, they may see the back of yours as well.
+ please sign your page and include some kind of contact info, in case someone would like to write you about your page!
+ send in $5 US to cover binding & return shipping.
+ include a neatly handwritten, or typed, address label.
+ please me sure to put your pages in a plastic baggie to protect them from damage during shipping.
when?
+ drop the pages in the mail no later than 01 November 2007.
+ returns will go out around 20 November 2007.
(communicate, please. let us know if you need to drop out early enough for your spot to be covered by someone else.)

+ one alternate, in case someone drops out: _____________
(please give us at least 2 weeks notice if you will be unable to complete your pages. the person who signs up to be the alternate should be able and willing to create 15 gorgeous works of art for this book with 2 weeks notice. if no one else signs up, i will take over 1 drop out slot if that is needed.)
UPDATE: (14 DEC) updatey goodness! well, i was waiting on 2 sets of pages, one in the mail (which seems to have gotten lost), and 1 from a local artist friend. i am currently working on pages to replace the ones that were lost in the mail, because i want this book to be a full 15. a few entries came in late, hence the pushed back timeline. i'm working as fast as my little concept will allow. i'm certain you'll be pleased with the product. =>
if anyone has had any address change-y goodness, speak now or forever hold your peace! these pages could go out any time should i get a big chunk of time to work on them together! i guarantee you will have them by Christmas, provided they don't get jammed up in the postal rush of presents. (the line at the post office yesterday was horrific, so i can only imagine what it'll be like in a couple days.)
