((Very few spoilers and the only two really big ones are well marked.))
Okay, I just saw Burton's "Alice in Wonderland" today, about thirty minutes ago, and I have to say; I loved it. I'm kind of surprised I did, too, because I've always been a fan of the books, since I was just a little kid, and I thought Burton was going to ruin "Through the Looking Glass." True, the movie was a lot different, but I really liked it in the end. The 3D was a rather nice touch and the graphics looked great. I'm really excited for the DVD to come out so I can see how they made everyone look so different, like the Knave, and how they worked around most of the cast being part CGIed or even full CGI. I don't think I've ever seen a movie use animation in quite this way or to this extent. It was wonderful and really fit the Wonderland image. I mean, they went out of there way to do it, like making Hatter's eyes just a big bigger than natural. All that effort for such a small thing? That's dedication.
Okay, now the show was rather adult, in my mind. A moat of heads, stabbing out people's eyes, a fiery massacre . That was pretty 'whoa' and I don't know if I'd take really young kids to see it, but it wasn't the worst thing I've ever scene. I do think the story was a bit too serious for the ending to be so silly, but I loved it anyway.
(MAJOR SPOILER) I did hate that Alice went back home, too. You'd have had to put me in chains and drag me, kicking and screaming, to get me to go back there and leave Wonder-Under-land. Or to leave the Hatter. That guy was awesome and Alice was a "stupid girl," as the Caterpiller rightfully called her. (Major Spoiler ended)
I want to keep this kind of short, so I'm not going to go into a lot of detail on the rest of the story, but I did want to talk about the characters. Per usual, Hatter was my favorite. I'm not a huge Johnny Depp fan (don't hate him, I'm just note drooling in love with him) but I really liked him here. Hatter is always my favorite character, but this version was just great. So tragically cute and broken. I loved his eye-color changes and how he'd start rambling on and people would have to stop him. And his changing voice, accent, and all that. It was great. He was my favorite part of the show and I really wanted him to show up in the real-world, with Alice, like he did in the new TV series "Alice." (Spoiler) But alas, no such luck. (Spoiler)
The White Queen actually cracked me up. I loved the way she moved, by how it was really just an act for her people. It was nice. I liked the Red Queen too, but not as a favorite, which is surprising as I always love the villains. I did feel sorry for her, as usual, and found her very funny. I loved that Bonham Carter used her "Bellatrix" accent for this, what with the lisp and the 'w' for 'r's' and all that. Made me love her even more. Alice was also really great. I wasn't sure about her at first, but by the end she really had my heart. She was pretty, fierce, and a good actress. A very nice choice, especially for a nobody actor.
All in all, I loved it and give it 5 stars, which is very rare for me. I'm sure there are things I didn't like about this show, but I'm still on too much of a high from it to really say what. Maybe I'll get back to it later.
