Today was... boring work wise, but good in the area of getting to know my colleagues better. There is a guy a bit further up from me, who has Bernard Black hair. It's quite long and the fringe is gelled up, as far as I can tell, by him putting gel in it and running his hand through it. Consequently his hair sticks up at all kinds of odd (and occasionally improbable) angles. It was quite distracting when I was talking to him earlier.
The office has several irc channels, and I've been sitting on them the last few days, getting a feel for what was going on, but I stated to get involved in some of the conversations today, so it's nice to feel I'm getting on with people and getting to know them a bit. There's a non-work-related channel that has some brilliantly odd conversations
A guy who is leaving at the end of this week specifically came over to invite me to his leaving drinks tomorrow night, which I thought was cool considering he's, you know, leaving so won't ever actually get to know me.
Going to see Scott Pilgrim again on Friday with a couple of guys from work.
Oh, and I got invited to the semi-regular Whisky Night (well, Rum Night this time) where people gather, have a meal and test out some whisky (or rum). Kind of feel like I've been let into the club a bit. Best thing is, what happens when you get a room full of not only geeks, but engineers to organise something important like alcohol tasting? Shit gets organised. It has it's own wiki page. Set out like a project / minutes page. Each night has it's own section which lists who was there, the whisky they drank, and what everyone thought of it. Each night also has a "lessons learnt" section that includes such gems as "cats are xxx's kryptonite" and "you can make fizzy bovril with a soda stream" (There are occasionally sensible things like where was good for a meal etc)
I am starting to really like the guys in this office.
Also, I went swimming after work today. I'd forgotten a) how much I like swimming b)how hungry I get after swimming and c)how good swimming makes me feel. I think I actually had more energy when I left the pool than when I got in. Gonna make it a weekly occurrence.
So, memewards.
• Day 22 - Favourite documentary
I don't think I've ever actually watched a documentary film, not one that's had a cinema release. I don't really watch documentaries all that much.
I think, if it's not cheating too much (what with it being made for TV and in two parts) I pick
Stephen Fry: The Secret Life of the Manic Depressive (2006)
A charming, touching documentary showing various people coping with their illness and telling their stories. Obviously, it is a subject very dear to Stephen's heart, and he is very candid about his own experiences, including filming some of his mood cycles. This makes his interviews all the more interesting as he knows what questions to ask to get the heart of how it affects people. The mix of celebrities and "real" people is a good balance as well. I teared up more than once watching it. I also found the more "technical" bits interesting such as the various treatments on offer and the research being done at the moment. Heartfelt and informative.
