hormonal?

so, i was just watching 30 days and in this episode they follow the lives of coal miners. it's such a sad life for the men and their families, though they make about 60 G starting out and 100 for supervisor positions. the whole thing reminds me of my hometown where everyone and their brother works at the paper mill. my grandfather worked there and my mom, my dad worked there for 31 years and my mom 25 when the shut the mill down. it's recently re-opened and my brother works there. it's a way of life and the only industry.

anyway, at the end of the episode i started to cry because the main guy they are following gets black lung which has a horrible prognosis if they continue working in the mines. it just made me so sad 'cause these guys just want to take care of their families and it's the only life they've ever know and after 50 who is going to train them for a new career. my dad is practically deaf from the loud machines on the floor and all the guys have respiratory problems because of all the dust.

i hope the guy from the show retires. his poor wife is so worried about him and he refuses to wear the respirator. i just picture her spending the rest of her life carting him around with his oxygen. so sad. i'd like to chalk it up to hormones, but i think i'm just sentimental.
