Sundogs and Sunny Days

In Sept. 08 I took a picture of this inexplicable rainbow looking thing that was oddly placed in the sky and appeared under very wrong conditions. Another day I had seen just a small section of a rainbow that was again strange to me. I had forgotten all about them until I saw a video of a sonic boom http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SsDEfu8s1Lw on Wednesday in which they mention a sundog in the title. I had no idea what that was until I googled it. It is a mock sun that can appear as another smaller ball of light, or can be colored, as a rainbow. They are at the same level on the horizon as the sun, can be on either or both sides, and sometimes form a halo around the sun. They are best observed when the sun is low in the sky and are caused by sun reflecting through ice crystals, though they can appear anywhere in the world, any time of year.

Oddly enough just having learned about them and only having seen them a couple times, Thursday morning I was driving to work and there was a sundog to the left of the sun. I stopped to take a picture but trying to catch anything far away on my phone is not feasible. That night I drove home from work and again a sundog, this time on both sides. On my way in on Friday there was a single. I'm such a dork, this makes me so happy.

This was the sundog I saw a couple years ago

Google it, some of the images are breathtaking. So happy for these longer sun-filled days.

Anyway, most of this was a back-story because of my dream last night. It was the end of the world. I was grocery shopping and when I left the store a rainbow started to spread over the sky, except instead of a normal pattern, it squiggled and curved like a child coloring on a blank piece of paper, until it covered the entire sky. Everyone stood there trying to decide what was happening when it started to rain and washed the rainbows away. The rainbow appeared in the same fashion as before and then more rain. This continued until it just looped over and over repeatedly and we knew the end was very close. It wasn't scary, it was peaceful.
