Apocalypse, uh...sooner or later.

Sigh. My love for Jon Stewart is endless, yes, but Comedy Central needs to get him his writers back. Make a deal, Comedy Central. Maaaaake a deaaaaaaal, ooooOOOooooOOOooo.

/voodoo.

So here's the problem: I'm trying very hard to end the world for abyssinia4077's finish-a-thon but, surprisingly, the apocalypse is rather resistant to being brought about. Who ( Read more... )

Re. the lack of Jon Stewart - have you seen this this comic?: http://xkcd.com/360/

I have a suspicion that surreallis is going to end up with a lot of apocalyptic city fics - I know I'm working on one. :) Although chances are good that I won't finish this one, either. I've decided that some research would help - i.e. I'd like to go for a walk and decide where they'd go, what abandoned buildings they'd choose to hole up in, that sort of thing. Unfortunately, I'm living several thousand miles from the right city. Hm. Maybe I should move them all here, instead...?

Hee! Yeah, that's a great one.

I was thinking the same thing, about wishing I could go check out on foot the area they'd be bouncing around it. I wouldn't put them in New York, which is closest, but I seriously considered doing backflips and getting them to Philadelphia so I could go do research. But there's no reason for them to be there at all. Alas!

Have you thought about trying Google Earth? What city are you bouncing them around in? Maybe Google Maps has Streetview for it. (I know it doesn't have Colorado Springs, but it does have Denver.)

I was thinking about abandoned city apocafic today too, and had a similarly difficult time trying to decide how the world ended. And why the gate wouldn't be an option if the city is still standing. And why they'd be immune if it was a virus. And... *sigh*

On the other hand, you can always just ignore the 'how' and just focus on the aftermath. Yes, it's cheating a wee bit, but we do it all the time in apocafic and no one minds. It's the teamy goodness we're all after anyway. ;)

Well, it could be that the apocalypse is, well, NOW. So they aren't immune / haven't yet got to the gate, etc. That way, you don't have to explain anything - because the characters haven't got enough distance yet to work out what happened. It's still happening.

Why yes, I am an expert in 'how not to explain a plot you haven't thought out'. *g*

Very true, although I think a lot of the appeal of apocafic is actually reading about they live afterwards, when the city is long abandoned and they have to figure out how to survive long-term. And the angst is still there but not in a 'omg, we will die soon!' sort of way ( ... )

Exactly! Maybe we're discovering another reason why there isn't more cityfic. It sounds like we need to hijack one of those group thats Abyssis was writing about for a a 'metropolis apocalypse' theme. ;)

except for that one, SG-1 can't figure out how the world ended and, uh...neither can I

Do you need to know for purposes of the plot? Or can it be a Mystery?

I'm trying to figure out a way to have it be a mystery even to me and still have some kind of resolution -- I was planning on SG-1 gating in after-the-fact, so it would probably work if I can nail that problem down.

Maybe they 'gated back and found the apocalypse already happened and they're trying to figure it out?

(and apoca-city fic would be cool)

(after I finish both apocafics in my head, neither of which takes place on Earth mostly at all, would be fun to try....you know, next year)

You can doooo eeeet!!!!!

You got it in one, actually! But I'm worried that if I don't even know what happened, there won't be any resolution. (And obviously they'll never even get a clue.) Bah! Apocalypses. So complicated. Next time I'm just doing a great big explosion. ;)

On the plus side, the sudden surge of postings in a month, if everybody finishes, will be awesome. Are you gonna write both?

Maybe it's just because I've gone so long without, but I thought that Jon did a decent job (especially since his whole episode was about the strike), and I thought Stephen was every bit as good as usual. If not better than usual!

But then, I was in serious withdrawal.

Oh, yeah, it definitely was still good, and there were parts that were very funny. (Jon wondering whether the WGA wouldn't bargain with his show because of anti-Semitism cracked me up.) He seemed kind of flustered, though, and I will be missing headlines until the day they come back.

Stephen was totally on. I will miss the Word, though. :/
