Outpost Gallifrey: Casting info for the New, Improved and More Amerricun version of Torchwood from EW and TV Guide.
(EW) Question: Any whisperings on the new Torchwood you’d care to share? - Nicky
Ausiello: Whisperings? More like shoutings. Among the casting intel I’ve gathered on the new season (airing on my new favorite cable network, Starz), the show is out to cast a new series regular - Rex Matheson, a wickedly funny (operative word: wicked) CIA agent born to make waves. Almost as key to the new season are recurring characters Esther Katusi, a CIA grunt in her early 20s who learns what she’s really made of only when she’s forced to, and Oswald Jones, a convicted murderer and pedophile who will be as shocked as anyone to learn how easily infamy and fame can be exchanged for one another.
(TV Guide) And Starz's new season of Torchwood is shaping up with the search for one series regular and two supporting roles. Rex Matheson is a white, twenty-something CIA agent who sounds sort of like FX's animated Archer spy: a fearless, cocky thrill seeker. Recurring characters include Esther Katusi, a newbie Watch Analyst in the CIA who is deeply (and secretly) in love with Rex. And Oswald Jones is the dangerous psychotic villain. He's a forty-something murderer and pedophile who gets sprung from the slammer into the spotlight. Rex - catch this sicko!
Shall we break that down?
Rex Matheson is a white [ed. of course he is], twenty-something [ed. of course he is] CIA agent who sounds sort of like FX's animated Archer spy: a fearless, cocky thrill seeker. [ed. of course he is, and I'm pretty sure the emphasis will be on "cock" in that sentence]
Esther Katusi, a newbie [ed. of course she is] Watch Analyst in the CIA who is deeply (and secretly) in love with Rex [ed. of course she is, facepalm] . And... in her early 20s [ed. of course she is]. And... leans what's she's made of when forced to [ed: I'm placing bets now on alien or some other non-humanoid, though will probably be white in appearance though that last name of Katusi is also the name of a place in Zambia].
Oswald Jones is the dangerous psychotic villain. He's a forty-something murderer and pedophile who gets sprung from the slammer into the spotlight.
I just... don't even have editor's comments about this one... please don't let them even attempt to "reform" a pedophile to be edgy. Even though I won't be watching anyway, I'll still be hearing about it, and just... ew. If the other two characters are white and this guy isn't... massive ew, especially since the majority of murdering pedophiles are white males.
From what I've heard, Starz is somewhat more open to a variety of ethnicity in casting than most networks, but we still have a male white lead. Despite the show already having one of those. Though I wouldn't be surprised if both Jack and Gwen are there more as a setup for the new characters to get their own all-Team USA show.
Don't have a handy link, but I think it was a bit at AfterElton that said comments from both John Barrowman and Eve Myles seemed to indicate the majority of filming would be in the US. With the preponderance of shows that recycle the title of other variants (often letters) and just add another word or letters for the locale, here's my leading choices, so vote or your choice or add your own.
