Doctor Who Marathon

BBCA is showing a marathon of Turn Left, The Stolen Earth and Journey's End.

I really like Turn Left, despite the critter f/x being so awful looking, and the other two are mostly silly fun (except for the fate of one character!), but I can't help but roll my eyes over every scene with Badass!Rose, Marbles!in!Mouth!Rose, or Pining!Rose. So,

I really hated how Mickey was treated sometimes. I got a glimmer of hope when he got a bit badass in the alternate dimension, but then he ends up still having his life defined by Rose. She doesn't want him, so he goes... somewhere back on our earth.

I think it was supposed to be hinted he'd have some sort of association with Torchwood, even just as a consultant, but after how the last series ended, I don't think I want Mickey anywhere near them.

I love Captain Jack when he guests on Doctor Who, but I've found I'm not all that fond of Emo Jack on Torchwood. It's like two different people who happen to be immortal and have the same coat. ;)

Rose got saddled with the "LOVE LOVE LOVE" thing, Martha was nursing a crush, and Donna kept insisting she wasn't anything special. Ten even has his constant "I'm sorry" meme that even some of the others have picked up too. The show doesn't do subtle themes very well, does it? ;)

I'm sort of hoping a change in TPTB and star will help break that cycle a bit and not totally rely on recent characters and events so much. Don't get me wrong, I like some of them, but it does get repetitive sometimes.

I'd like more exploration of time and space and less of the here and now. I'm pretty sure they stuck to present day earth to save money, but I'm hoping they've built up enough sets they can redress to do some different things now.
