Hollywood Reporter: Why ‘Y: The Last Man’ Was Abruptly Canceled

tl;dr On October 15th, options on the cast would expire. That's basically paying the cast not to take another job. The show had a lot of delays due to recasting, a new showrunner, and an actual pandemic, which made this deadline shorter than normal from the air date. The clock was running out, and extending it would cost ~3 million.

I've seen some thinking it won't be able to move anywhere, because Hulu is owned by Disney, which doesn't exactly like to give anything to a competitor. But it's actually made by FX, so that may leave an out for the prodcution (and I'm still not sure why they didn't air it on FX itself, which might have broadened the audience). I've also seen some wondering if there's a chance HBO might go for it, since they're doing DC adaptations, and the graphic novel was under their Vertigo title.
