I'm not generally a Christmas movie fan, but apparently 2020's Yuletide is really gay, so I had to check this one out. It's basically the gay cowboy Christmas movie I never knew I wanted.
It follows the traditional Christmas movie trope of big city/small town love interest. "Big city" guy Wyatt returns to the ranch he grew up on to convince his mother to ditch the money pit. He meets Heath, who is a ranch hand for the last few years. Aaaand, they're gay, with no coming out drama. Wyatt's mother is and has been totally fine with it, and even says she didn't tell Heath her son was gay because she didn't want him to feel like she was trying to fix them up (spoiler: she'd totally try to fix them up).
They do have a lot of Big Misunderstandings (also a common trope) after getting off on the wrong foot. We also get told a bit of their history that's influencing them, such as Wyatt had a girlfriend in high school, but came out during his graduation speech (and she's still a friend, despite him not telling her first). Heath's father skipped out before he hit his teens, and the ranch's annual Christmas sleigh rides were the thing he remembers finally bringing his mother somewhat out of her depression after.
Wyatt's ex/now friend Blake is also friends with Heath now, and she and Wyatt's mom, Deb (Andie McDowell), often seem to want to knock their heads together. Blake's husband is overseas with Doctors Without Borders, so she's set up for a sad Christmas until she tries to get these two stubborn gays together. There's also a little romance for Deb too, as she's long been interested in the former ranch hand who retired, but wasn't quite ready to get involved with everyone again.
A happy ending is never in doubt, but it's honestly nice to see it unfold with some Drama, but not anything high stakes, just a sweet little romance.
