This is our first glimpse of post-Endgame MCU. This trailer starts with Spoilermeister Tom Holland saying that if you haven't seen Endgame yet, you might not want to watch this. Listen to him. If you've seen Endgame, and watched this trailer, join me behind the cut.
OK, Tom Holland has been killing me in the last two films and it looks to continue in the next. We get to see Peter in mourning over Tony, but Happy is still involved in his life. I guess Happy inherited Tony's Dad Duties. There's also a line about if he's going to be the next Iron Man, and the scene is played as a joke, but I do wonder if they're going to have someone, Spidey or not, step into that role. Even Peter later says the world needs the next Iron Man.
Which leads me to the big reveal (for me anyway) that apparently The Snap has broken things on a cosmic level. Fury says it broke a hole in our dimension, Beck (Mysterio) is from another earth, and the word "multiverse" is uttered for I think the first time in the MCU. I still want to rewatch Endgame to see if I can make sense of the weird time travel stuff, because it's mostly internally consistent until it's not, but basically it was saying you don't change your current future, you create new timelines, i.e. a multiverse.
I've been wondering if we're now in a different timeline from the previous movies, which would make sense of the stuff that doesn't make sense, such as Peggy having married and having kids. No way could Steve have been her secret husband for decades without someone knowing. Plus he knows about Hydra growing within SHIELD and Bucky being tortured and turned into a weapon, and I can't imagine him not doing anything. Even if he didn't interfere, his very existence in the past could have created multiple timeline branches with a mere right turn instead of a left, on top of what the team already did during their time travel shenanigans.
Opening up the multiverse concept opens up a whole new host of options. Character dead in the main timeline? Here they are to guest star from another timeline, but they aren't sticking around. So we could see Tony, Nat and 20-something Steve again, if they choose to go this route. And we could see Miles Morales and other versions of Spider-man too. TPTB have hinted that Miles does exist and they plan to get to him eventually, so this could be an easy way to bring him in and not change the main MCU story arcs. It would basically become like the comics in which there are multiple versions going on at the same time across the multiverse. I figure most will stick with the main MCU timeline, so it doesn't confuse the casual fans, but they can do offshoots not unlike Spider-man: Into the Spiderverse which aren't technically in the MCU, but most definitely plays around in the multiverse.
"YOU DO NOT GHOST NICK FURY" is tied with "Bitch please, you've been to outer space" as my favorite lines.
