I posted a month ago about A&E Americanizing the French show Les Revenants as The Returned (which is what the French version also aired under on Sundance Channel). Now that I'm seeing more ads for the American show which premeires on Monday, the clips I'm seeing seems like a shot-by-shot remake, but of course there will probably be some alterations. But now I'm really curious to see if they keep one aspect of the show.
[Spoiler (click to open)]The character of Julie was a nurse who was attacked by a serial killer seven years ago, but survived under mysterious circumstances. The return of the dead is extra disturbing to her, as she starts to question whether or not she survived the attack and is actually dead, and a young boy who has returned sort of latches onto her. As the story progresses, we learn that she had been in a relationship with Laure, a Gendarmerie lieutenant, but the aftermath of the attack drove them apart. The return of the dead brings them back together somewhat, as they struggle to understand what has happened and what it all means.
So will the American version keep a lesbian couple as part of the storyline? There's a character named Julie Han, so it looks that character will remain, which considering the large part she had, is not surprising. In one article, it says the character is doctor, so she gets an upgrade. It also mentions the casting of a character (on IMDB, it lists the name as Nikki Banks) as the sheriff’s chief deputy, which would be equivalent to Laure's role. It doesn't mention Julie and Nikki being in a relationship, but they could be saving that for a surpise. Or else they're going to be former roommates/friends at best, but they could just as easily leave out their relationship completely. American TV is so disappointing about this sort of thing, but we shall see tomorrow, or maybe in upcoming weeks, because I don't think we had the reveal of the relationship until a few episodes in.
