When fandom adopts a headcanon...

Saw this over at Tumblr, and thought it merited some discussion, which is nigh impossible over there.

when fandom adopts a headcanon and it spreads and gains traction and you just do not agree with it but it’s everywhere and you just

I haven't had any that really gave me an ick, but I'm often left puzzled as to where the headcanon originated, and why. This is especially true when I'm mostly reading fic in a fandom and not discussion (though often not for lack of trying to find discussion).

The one that pops into mind is I've recently read fic by different authors in the NCIS fandom that have decided that Leroy Jethro Gibbs would have the nickname "Jet". No, just no. Great big bowl of no. I guess it may be a way they're trying to make him sound "cool" considering his old-fashioned names, or maybe that he'd only allow that special someone to use that nickname even if he didn't like it. No. Gibbs headslap time. Not sure if it's "everywhere", but I've seen it multiple times and it always drop kicks me out of the fic.

Now with Teen Wolf, I swear some people's headcanons have their own headcanons. And most of them make more sense than the canon we've been shown.

Though there are some headcanons done so well that I get disappointed when we get actual canon. For example, many fans had a headcanon that Agent Coulson was in Special Forces, potentially Army Rangers, before Nick Fury recruited him into SHIELD. Perhaps their mission paths crossed at some point. But we now have it from Phil that he was recruited by Fury right out of high school, which makes me all sorts of "Hunh?" What would have attracted Fury's attention to Phil while he was in high school and recruit him as soon as he graduated?

fanfic, ncis, agents of shield, teen wolf, fandom
