I Won't Ever Leave

...and another one...

Obi-Wan didn't know how long he'd been standing there staring at his Master's funeral pyre. Flames had died to glowing embers, now they were only ashes. The ashes and dust that now made up his life.

Tears had dried on his face, salty tracks the only sign of the former emotion. The battle kept replaying in his mind. Seeing his Master fall...he hadn't fathomed that it would happen. But it had, and now...he was left with a nine year old boy in his charge.

He didn't know how long he'd been standing there before he felt a gentle tug on his cloak. He blinked, looking down, and staring into big blue eyes. It was Anakin. The boy's mouth worked for a moment, but nothing came out. Obi-Wan knelt down, he really wasn't any good with children.

"What is it, young one?"

No sooner had the words left his mouth had Anakin jumped into his arms, burying his face in the folds of his cloak. The newly made Knight wrapped his arms around the boy as his little shoulders started shaking form silent sobs. He felt the sting of tears behind his own eyes, but pushed it back. He neeeded to be strong now. For the boy if nothing else.

"You're not going to leave me too, are you?"

Obi-Wan stiffened, but wrapped his arms tighter around the boy. "No Anakin. I'm not." he whispered into his hair. "I never will." Anakin was hiccupping softly now, but those bright blue eyes looked up at him. A sheen of tears was still there. "Promise?" Obi-Wan hugged the boy tighter, voice rough with emotion. "I won't ever leave you, Ani."

"I promise."
