Last night was my first official meeting with the local astronomical society! I wanted to post about it while it was still kind of fresh in my memory ( Read more... )

This sounds really great but I am astounded that Yahoo Groups are still even a thing!

Right? How YG managed to exist past 2010 is beyond me. The format honestly confuses me, so I am glad they are looking into more modern alternatives!

Have you come across JiscMail? That's ancient too and a law librarian group I'm part of recently send out a poll to find out if it should be moved elsewhere. Everyone said no and it's quite amazing to think that something so primative is still the best way of communicating.

Wow. That group sounds really cool. I hope you can make some real connections, and some interesting stuff to do. I bet you're more than smart enough to catch on how to use all the equipment pretty quick.

Thanks :) I hope I catch on quick, too. Most of the members are older, but the ones I spoke to were really friendly and seemed very knowledgeable. I am excited to learn even more. For instance, I knew telescopes were complex, but I didn't realize you could write practically an entire book on just the basics of picking one out @.@

Me, too! They are having a happy hour tonight, too, and I wasn't going to go because I am nervous and don't want to be awkwardly standing off to myself the whole time. I was emailing with one of the members today about something else, and he asked me if I was going and encouraged me to come. I told him I would be there :)

I did! It was a lot of fun!!! I meant to post, but the weekend got away from me. I got to see a whole bunch of star clusters and nebulas and even a few galaxies. One of them taught me how to navigate by star hopping, too. They had one set of high-powered binoculars and two different telescopes. I learned a ton and am super excited for the next event~

That sounds really fun and exciting. I kind of want to do something similar, but I'm too afraid of people =P

haha I get that. I've always been wary of new people, and up until a couple years ago I would not have gone if I didn't know anyone or have a friend to go with me. I have been trying to expand my social circle for months now and finally told myself "JUST GO ALREADY >:| " ... so go I did. I was super nervous, and still am, tbh, but once you take the step and start meeting the people involved it gets less scary ^.^

That's so cool! Did you study astronomy or are you just interested in it?

I'm just interested in it :) I wanted to study astrophysics when I was younger, but I am absolutely horrible at math (like, I still count on my fingers and I'm 26...), so I would not have lasted. Now with this group I can enjoy all it has to offer without math being involved!
