Generation "I want a trend!"

So, as Oliver says, I've hopped on the bandwagon again.
Once again, my eyes have been opened to the crap of the corporations, and the one I work for. Again, do I become aware of the poverty and political unrest in countries. The world depresses me, I find it hard to be optimistic about the Earth's future.

Whilst countries and world leaders fap ( Read more... )

Remember Daria? The cartoon showed a generation of various steretypes, and our favourite, the main character, didn't buy into it and dressed how she liked.
But as intelligent and coolly cynical as Daria was, she was still just a kid, and still had to re-learn fundamental things already known (but only intellectually) when the complexity of life distracted her.

Remember how popular the show was?
Have hope.

Never really liked Daria... she was against following the norm, but it struck me that she was a stereotype herself. Actively trying not to conform. At least, that's how I viewed it. Hypocritical.

Far as I'm concerned the show was trash :P

...

Nezz: Ya know how you're concerned about this need to follow a trend? Happened all throughout history, and there's always been people who don't conform and do their own thing. Society will always be society, a bunch of sheep with the occasional goat thrown in the mix. At least we have goats to show us how much of a sheep mentality society has ^_^.

Yay goats!

Daria was awesome imo. Tis a good point you are making though Sam.

Cass: the only thing that worries me with these trends is that people completely conform to them because they think they have to. It's like *shudder* emos. Some people think they need to be depressed, wear black to fit into the emo culture to listen to "emo" music. Its when people become completely obsessed with this trend and think they should give there whole personality away just to fit in that worries me.

There are people that don't have personalities that are strong enough to stand on their own, and who feel as though they don't have anything meaningful to contribute on their own merit. Unfortunately, in my experience anyway, this is mostly down to other people making them feel that way. Or, at least, their perceptions of how other people treat them.

I'm less concerned with people being conformist in order to try and find a place for themselves in society, and more concerned with the people who exhibit such rudeness and arrogance to their fellow man in general that they can influence other people's mental well-being. In my own experience such feelings of superiority have been grossly misplaced :P

Daria may have seemed cool - but did you notice the way she was meant to be the geek that no-one liked, yet all the cool people still talked to her... doesn't work like that folks!

and on the topic of Daria... notice how the airheads were called Britney and Kevin?? Maybe that's why Miss Spears married Kev... gotta fit the stereotypes

Lols @ RL marriage...

But, meh, the cool/popular people talked to me all the time! Sure, it was mostly unkind remarks about my weight/looks/intelligence/weight/money, but, like they spoke to me every day!
