You are so right on the pairing dynamics!

it bugs me a little when writers make Iruka a milquetoast or secret superhero, and Kakashi a monster or a shattered man.
This. I actually find it kind of refreshing now reading fics where both their personalities are kept in 'canon'.
I agree they're both ninjas for Konoha, rather than themselves.
