Why does a flamingo stand on one leg?
Flamingos may also be stand on one leg is to conserve body heat and energy.
A bird’s leg receives three times as much blood per heartbeat as their major muscles do, and that blood provides a great deal of warmth to the animal.
Flamingos have very long legs, which equals to a lot energy needed to pump the blood through both legs.
So by tucking one leg into the body, it reduces the heart's strain to pump blood more easily.
At the same time, tucking one leg in can also conserve body heat since they sometimes live in cold weather.
Though they still do stand on one leg in hot weather too.
Another theory is that they stand on one leg to dry their other foot off.
If you stood in the water all day, what would happen to your skin? Most likely your skin starts to "prune up" and wrinkle.
Wading birds like flamingo can also have this problem.
So by changing which leg they stand on, flamingos can allow their feet and legs to dry.
Many people think that flamingos stand on one leg to better camouflage themselves to hunt their food, because their shadow from the water will look like a tree with thin trunk leading to bigger top.
Although their prey -- shrimp or algae -- don't seem to spend much thought to look out for hungry birds.
People who study flamingos think that this might be related to flamingo's brain.
Dolphins for example, turn off one side of their brain at a time when they sleep, this is because dolphins do not breath involuntarily like we do. They keep on side of their brain going in order to make themselves breath.
Ducks also turn off one side of their brain like dolphins do.
They rest with one eye shut and the other open, it benefits them so that they can be aware of any predators present.
Ducks have also been known to stand on one leg for long periods of time (along with herons, storks and geese).
If flamingos, too, keep half their brain awake while they sleep, that could explain why they sleep on one leg.
The leg controlled by the side of the brain that's awake stays on the ground to maintain balance while the other leg and foot get to rest up for a while.
