Alex's B-day Mix: Here Comes the Sun (BFFs)

Apr 22, 2010 21:53

OKAY story behind this. I've been tossing around a few songs Alex and I have casually mentioned fit our friendship for a while, trying to make a proper playlist out of them. When I realized I was shit poor this year and couldn't afford giving her a proper birthday present, I upped the ante and managed to put a decent length of a playlist together. It sort of chronologically fits our relationship up until now, too. I realized that about halfway through and was amused. Anyway. Some of the songs are adorable, some of them are depressing, some of them are hopeful, and all of them are awesome. That's what happens when a multifaceted friendship grows, and when it survives all of the bullshit life throws into the fan you're trying to get relief from. It's always best to have someone there to laugh at you while hosing all the excrement off you, I think.

Whatever, these metaphors suck and I need to do my history paper. I didn't want to put this up late, though. Alex, I love you, and may the chronology aspect of this list make it grow into more than a double LP throughout our lifetime. Happy 20th, and let's quintuple that shit together. &hearts

1. The White Stripes - We're Going to Be Friends (Meeting at McDevitt)

Fall is here, hear the yell
Back to school, ring the bell
Brand new shoes, walking blues
Climb the fence, books and pens
I can tell that we're going to be friends
I can tell that we're going to be friends

We don't notice any time pass
We don't notice anything
We sit side by side in every class
Teacher thinks that I sound funny
But she likes the way you sing

2. Sonic Youth - My Friend Goo (because everyone thought I was some sort of subversive badass for no reason)

my friend Goo has a real tattoo
she always knows just what to do
she looks through her hair like she doesn't care
what she does best is stand and starehttp://www.livejournal.com/update.bml
she can play the drums in two
and the boys say :'Hey Goo what's new?'
[Hey Goo what's new?]
My friend Goo just says, "PU!!"

3. Jem - Save Me (My various periods of depression and Alex's super thick shell in dealing with it that I thank multiple deities for)

Mirror mirror on the wall
Who’s the dumbest of them all
Insecurities keep growing
Wasted energies are flowing
Anger, pain and sadness beckon
Panic sets in in a second
Be aware it’s just your mind
And you can stop it anytime

Save me

4. Hans Zimmer - Not In Blood, But in Bond (The darker times in junior year.)

5. Joy Division - Atmosphere (Things lookin' up a bit)

Walk in silence
Don't walk away, in silence
See the danger
Always danger
Endless talking
Life rebuilding
Don't walk away

Walk in silence
Don't turn away, in silence
Your confusion
My illusion
Worn like a mask of self-hate
Confronts and then dies
Don't walk away

People like you find it easy
Naked to see
Walking on air
Hunting by the rivers
Through the streets
Every corner abandoned too soon
Set down with due care
Don't walk away in silence
Don't walk away

6. Neutral Milk Hotel - Three Peaches (Friendship gave me reason to breathe and stuff. Yeah)

So wake up, run your lips across your fingers until you find
Some scent of yourself that you can hold up high
To remind yourself that you didn't die
On a day that was so crappy, whole and happy you're alive

You seem so bruised
And it's beautiful as it's reflecting off from you as it shines
You're in the bathroom carving holiday designs into yourself
Hoping no one will find you, but they found you
And they took you
And you somehow survived

So wake up, and if the holidays don't hollow out your eyes
Then press yourself against whatever
You find to be beautiful and trembling with life
Because I'm so happy you didn't die

7. The Beatles - Here Comes the Sun (Alex says this song makes her think of me and I am constantly moved by the fact.)

Here comes the sun, here comes the sun
And I say it's all right
Little darling, it's been a long cold lonely winter
Little darling, it feels like years since it's been here
Here comes the sun, here comes the sun
And I say it's all right
Little darling, the smiles returning to their faces
Little darling, it seems like it's years since it's been here
Here comes the sun, here comes the sun
And I say it's all right
Sun, sun, sun, here it comes
Sun, sun, sun, here it comes
Sun, sun, sun, here it comes
Sun, sun, sun, here it comes
Little darling, I feel that ice is slowly melting
Little darling, it seems like years since it's been clear
Here comes the sun, here comes the sun
It's all right, it's all right

8. Dead Can Dance - Don't Fade Away (The bittersweet anxieties of college on the horizon)

Don't fade away, my brown-eyed girl
Come walk with me, i'll fill your heart with joy
And we'll dance through our isolation.
Seeking solace in the wisdom we bestow
Turning thoughts to the here and ever after
Consuming fears in our fiery halos

Say what you mean, mean what you say
I've heard that innocence has led us all astray
But don't let them make you and break you
The world is filled with their broken empty dreams
Silence is their only virtue
Locked away inside their silent screams

But for now, let us dance away this starry night
Filled with the glow of fiery stars
And with the dawn our sun will rise
Bringing a symphony of bird cries

Don't bring me down now, let me stay here for awhile
You know life's too short, let me bathe here in your smile
I'm transcending the fall from the garden

9. The Smiths - I Won't Share You (Whenever I get jealous about you going out with other people and not being here. But I'm not a bitch so I get over it)

Life tends to come and go
That's OK
As long as you know
Life tends to come and go
As long as you know
Know, know, know, know, know
Know, know, know, know
Oh ...

I won't share you, no
I won't share you
With the drive
And the dreams inside
This is my time

I want the freedom and I want the guile
I want the freedom and the guile
Oh, life tends to come and go
As long as you know
Know, know, know, know
Know, know, know, know
Oh ...

I won't share you, no
I won't share you
I'll see you somewhere
I'll see you sometime
Darling

10. R.E.M. - Nightswimming (Memories of being awesome)

Nightswimming deserves a quiet night.
I'm not sure all these people understand.
It's not like years ago,
The fear of getting caught,
of recklessness and water.
They cannot see me naked.
These things, they go away,
replaced by everyday.

Nightswimming, remembering that night.
September's coming soon.
I'm pining for the moon.
And what if there were two
Side by side in orbit
Around the fairest sun?
That bright, tight forever drum
could not describe nightswimming.

You, I thought I knew you.
You I cannot judge.
You, I thought you knew me,
this one laughing quietly underneath my breath.
Nightswimming.

The photograph reflects,
every streetlight a reminder.
Nightswimming deserves a quiet night, deserves a quiet night.

11. The Beatles - Two of Us (Basically everything we have done and still do now)

Two of us riding nowhere
Spending someone's hard earned pay,
You and me Sunday driving,
Not arriving on our way back home.
We're on our way home,
We're on our way home,
We're going home.
You and I have memories
Longer than the road that stretches out ahead.
Two of us sending postcards
Writing letters on my wall.
You and me burning matches,
Lifting latches on our way back home.
We're on our way home,
We're on our way home,
We're going home.
Two of us wearing raincoats
Standing solo in the sun.
You and me chasing paper,
Getting nowhere on our way back home.
We're on our way home,
We're on our way home,
We're on our way home.

12. Neutral Milk Hotel - In the Aeroplane Over the Sea (BFFs fo realz <3)

What a beautiful face
I have found in this place
That is circling all round the sun
What a beautiful dream
That could flash on the screen
In a blink of an eye and be gone from me
Soft and sweet
Let me hold it close and keep it here with me, me

And one day we will die
And our ashes will fly from the aeroplane over the sea
But for now we are young
Let us lay in the sun
And count every beautiful thing we can see
Love to be
In the arms of all I'm keeping here with me, me

All songs found here.

Thanks to Jo for the album art and Ant for digging up the lyrics for me so this didn't take forever. Happy Birthday Alex <3 DON'T GET ALL EMOTIONAL OKAY?
