I love 50 Cent

I read an interesting interview with 50 Cent where he claimed the key to his success has been consistency above all other things, even above talent. I thought that was an interesting thought. To consistently create quality work, and consistently put it out (on a regular basis) seems really to be the key to not only making a name for oneself as an artist but also making a living (developing a solid, growing fan base).

I've been hearing a lot about this "The Game" character and so I downloaded a few songs to check them out (someday soon I'm going to have to go on a rap-album buying spree). The song "Hate It or Love It" has 50 Cent as a guest vocalist, and I think it may be 50's finest track. It's an awesome song, and even though 50 has such a small part on the disc, it's probably his best lyrics and delivery yet.

Listen to 50's first intro verse. It's the perfect display of 50's lyrical talents, moving away from the whole "blam-blam" thing which he does so well but which isn't too groundbreaking. In this song 50 is oddly sweet. It's a melancholy lyric about 50's childhood which is concise, perfectly delivered, and showcases a 50 who holds a sad, troubled nostalgia for a past he wishes had unfolded differently. The line about having his bicycle stolen almost breaks your heart.

People are starting to dismiss 50 as a product of hype and a flash in the pan. I hope that this second album coming up turns some heads, this guy is the real deal, a serious artist with an exceptional talent.

Speaking of which, I'm off to see Gruf the Druid and DJ Brace release their collaboration (Sound Barriers) tonight. It's at Dreg's at 9pm. Check it out. Gruf may be Winnipeg's best MC and DJ Brace is easily the city's best turntablist. I'm so excited about this show.
