Respite from Election Fatigue? Perhaps!

Nov 05, 2008 12:24

I guess, for me, I have so much election fatigue from being bombarded with it all for the last 2 years (and living in a battleground state so it's been HORRID for the last month or so) that I had a hard time getting super excited about the election yesterday. It's endearingly amusing to me that so many of my UKian pals felt so invested in a US election. It's kind of neat, really. I just hope Obama is able to deliver on many of his promises. I'm not confident in it - but maybe that's the election fatigue kicking in again.

Yeah, I voted for Obama, but mostly because I simply could not sanction a US with the potential for a bigoted bible thumper like Sarah Palin to be its leader. I used to really like John McCain before his lips became permanently attached to the "religious wrong's" butts, in fact, I voted for him in the Republican primary last time. While I would have preferred a different Democrat, Obama at least stirred things up and got people interested. Although, I wonder just how much of it was a reaction to Bush2 and how much was the cult of personality that Obama built around himself. Or possibly a dangerous and heady combination of the two!

Although, all things considered, I do think it's fantastically great that the color barrier has been broken and the door to the Good Ole Boys Club has been bashed in, but I would have been just as happy if it had been a woman or a gay person opening the door instead. Mostly what I'm interested in, though, is a MODERATE - both fiscally and ideologically. I'm sick to death of the political polarization. And even more sick of how much religion - particularly the uber-conservative Christian type - controls the political landscape. And I'm afraid, this election really made it worse.

Still though, congratulations to the Obama-Biden team for running a unique and really interesting campaign, and using all the new technology available to them. I think that really was the difference. I really hope that the change he and his people want to bring can happen but in a peaceful and painless way that won't sink us that much farther into national debt nor make us appear weak in the eyes of the rest of the world. I also hope that they manage to find a way to work Michelle into the fold. She's one smart lady and it'd be a shame to waste her intelligence and spunk on the run of the mill First Lady charity work. She could be a force to be reckoned with and rather than being just a First Lady, they should exploit her as First Partner.

Anyway, I'm just glad it's over now and sincerely hope the country (and the world) will be better off because of who we elected. Perhaps Barack Obama *is* an agent for change. I HOPE it's the right kind of change. Only time will tell.

That said, anyone have a guess as to what the over/under is on Putin invading Georgia on January 21st just to see what Obama will do? LOL
