It's not home improvement, it's home destruction. Let me explain.

So apparently he was informed that there was a fire hazard in the upstairs bedroom (each room must have two methods of escaping if there is a fire. This particular room has a porthole into the stairwell the size of a window and a door). He built a platform connecting the window in the hallway to the porthole in the bedroom, then covered the top and bottom.

The result: A huge, intrustive mess that juts into the stairwell that is so short that A) you can't sit in it and B) prevents the window from being opened because he put a top on it and C) makes my stairwell dark because it covers 3/4 of the window. Not the entire window, just 3/4, just enough to look incredibly tacky.

My roommate staying in this room tried to open the window and couldn't get enough leverage because the opening is so short and when she tried to get in, she got stuck.

I brought my friend Kevin over. He's a firefighter/paramedic/son of the Eaton Rapids fire chief, so he's got a bit of authority on the subject. Anyways, he took one look at it and said, "Put a note on that that says the structure must be removed or call an inspector. That is a bigger fire hazard than what was there."

Suggested home improvements that have not happened: Windows. The two upstairs do not close completely and I always wear my down jacket in my bedroom as a result. I sleep with three blankets (one down) and my sub-zero sleeping bag.
