Last night I roasted a pasture fed chicken over greens, as per a recipe I found in Ideas in Food. It was excellent - but the chicken was tough. I believe that it's only tough on a sliding scale - factory fed farm animals don't get a lot of exercise and are so soft they sometimes can be spongy. This bird had actual muscles but was not like the old stew hen I bought another time. Next chicken I will have to experiment with brining which I've never done before.
midnightstation finished off the galette tonight.
I love the kiwi suggestions! All of them! We'll see what happens. I may make a treat for my coworkers for friday. I also forgot that I'd made a kiwi cordial a while back. It only used up about 4 kiwis, but hey! It used them up, which is the important thing.
I made split pea soup tonight with the hambone I had. Oooo, it smells good. Lunch for me, lunch for
midnightstation, and I'm going to leave some for Mom too. She LOVES split pea :)
Tonight I also made chicken pot pie with the leftover chicken, some carrots, a couple of cups of peas, and two potatoes I'd previously roasted. My crust is a little TOO flaky, I'm way out of practice. But it was pretty tasty. Next time I have to use an improved crust, and make more sauce for the inside. But it will be good at lunch, or for dinner tomorrow.
I love having leftovers. The past few weeks have been bad for that kind of cooking, so I was glad to get a jump on our food supply tonight. Speaking of which, I bought some backup cans of tomatoes for sauce, and some ricotta cheese. I love tomato sauce and ricotta cheese all swirlded together. My mom used to give me some whenever she made ziti and I would eat a bowl of just that :) Other people more refined than I put it on pasta, but I'm happy just like that. Though for dinner one night I will put it on pasta too, but not without sneaking a small cupful of the sauce alone first!
As for books, I am in the middle of three. One is an audio book read by my favorite narrator. Excpect a review tomorrow before I crash for the night - hopefully. The other one is one of my favorite authors doing a Young Adult novel - and I'm not loving it. I'm pretty annoyed with it actually, and I really like good YA fiction, so I'm sad. I am too annoyed to read it tonight again. I'm also reading a small green-architecture book that
midnightstation gave me that I LOVE, but I left it at work by accident! The audio book is wonderful, but is too scary to listen to before bed.
Tonight I may give myself a break and do some comfort reading.
Which I ought to go do now. I feel as though I might keel over.
