Book Log: The Charles De Lint Festival

Books 37, 38 & 39, are all Charles DeLint novels. I've been on a bit of a kick, I guess!

Awhile back I read Somewhere to be Flying and have been wanting to read more of his work, now I have, and I am so glad that I am discovering him after he's written 20 novels. This means I just have to hunt them down - not wait for them to be written ( Read more... )

As much as I like Charles De Lint, I think he is a better short story writer than novelist. I would strongly suggest hunting out 'Dreams Underfoot', the first short story collection, and going forwards from there.

I'm not a very big fan of the short story form, in general. For example, I dislike Gaiman's short stories, but love his novels. There are very few writers where I like their short stories - not even Ursula LeGuin who is one of my favorite writers of all time, and has held that position since I was about 15 or so. I do like her novellas though.

The short stories tend to emphasise the fable elements of his writing more than the longer form. Trader never quite gelled for me as a novel - Someplace to be Flying on the other hand I really liked.
